The Sabers finished their season on an upnote, defeating Racine Horlick in a rousing WIAA regional semifinal match on Oct. 20 before falling to defending state runner-up Muskego in a regional final match on Saturday.
"What a match for the girls," said Sabers coach Ken Huber of the Horlick win. "They played very well. We only had two bad streaks which Horlick jumped upon and took us in the two games. Our defense really stepped up. We had a lot of touches on defense and a ton of digs. Horlick had beaten us twice over the season so it was refreshing to see the girls play with confidence against an opponent whom we were not successful against earlier in the season."
The Sabers won that match, 25-17, 19-25, 25-14, 22-25, 15-13, as Caitlin Koska had 15 kills, two blocks and 19 digs, while Sarah Losiniecki had four aces and 15 digs. Katie Babula contributed 32 assists and Mel Roemer 15 digs.
But in the regional final, the Sabers (13-15 match record) were overwhelmed by the Southeast champion Warriors, 25-13, 25-11, 25-18. Elissa Herman had four kills, Babula six assists and Roemer and Babula 10 digs each.
"The scores tell the story," said Huber. "They are clearly the best team we played all year. They are quick, big and talented. They dictated the pace against us and we could not catch up to them."
