The Panthers came within just a few points of qualifying for this week's WIAA State Tournament.

They fell to Racine Horlick, 13-25, 25-14, 23-25, 25-19, 17-15, in a sectional championship match at Greenfield on Nov. 3. That ended their season, while Horlick advanced to state and will play Westosha Central in the first round on Friday evening.

Greendale had topped Racine St. Catherine's, 22-25, 26-24, 25-20, 25-11, on Nov. 1 in a semifinal behind 22 digs from Justin Povlick, 17 kills from Jason Genz, 47 assists by Jake Kurczewski and six blocks by Matt Rehberg.

The Knights' season ended on a competitive note when they took 13th in the WIAA sectional in Kenosha on Saturday.

"We were very happy with the team's performance," said Oak Creek coach Kate Andreska. "All the girls swam very well. There were seven out of the 17 entries that were with personal/seasons bests. All the other times were very close to their personal bests. It was a great meet to end the season. We will miss the seniors that have grown throughout their years on the team."

Oak Creek scored 64 points for its spot as the Burlington co-op won with 369.

Top 16 finishes by event for the Knights included the following: 200 medley relay, Kaitlin Hartmann, Jackie Wnuk, Amanda Marciniak, Ashley Heiges, 11th (2:08.47); 100 butterfly, Marciniak, 15th (1:09.58); 200 free, Sydney Krimmer, 14th (2:12.43); 200 individual medley, Grace Goldensoph, 16th (personal best 2:35.01); 50 free, Angela Fleischman, 14th (27.31); 500 free, Krimmer, 11th (PB 5:55.26); Goldensoph, 14th (6:07.29); Katherine Chitko (PB 6:13.54); 100 backstroke, Hartmann (PB 1:09.7), Amy Seymour (PB 1:10.6); 100 breaststroke, Jackie Wnuk, 12th (PB 1:17.97); Lindsey Melotik, 16th (1:21.06); diving, Crystal Apfel, 15th (2:24.05); 200 free relay, Krimmer, Seymour, Kaitlin McIntosh and Fleischman, 11th (1:53.8); 400 free relay, Krimmer, Seymour, McIntosh and Fleischman, 10th (4:10.64).

Coach Rob Leboeuf knows just where his team's season began to head south, as the Falcons got out to a 3-1 start but lost their final five games to finish 3-6, 3-5 in the Woodland.

"We lost a lot of offensive linemen (to injury)," LeBoeuf said. "We don't have a lot of linemen anyway at the school, so we were not deep there. We had linebackers doubling as tackles."

Sophomore Matt Bublitz was the lone lineman to not have any injury problems.

The uncertainty on the line meant that senior running back Travis Karweik was not able to show all that he can do, even though he still finished with over 800 yards, and that the Falcons often struggled in the red zone because they could not run effectively.

They were able to move the ball through the air, however, as senior quarterback Luke Mentkowski passed for 2,107 yards (fifth in the state) and 12 touchdowns.

Senior Stephen Pelkofer collected 59 catches for 756 yards and averaged 12.8 yards per reception, while junior Sam Mentkowski had 45 catches for 690 yards (15.3 average). Pelkofer was third in the state in receptions and Mentkowski 13th.

The 200 freestyle team of Paige Bednarz, Kate Jungers, Sarah Hopefl and Megan Elliot and the 400 freestyle squad of Lizzy Pekar, Hopefl, Elliot and Caroline Rowe both finished 10th in a WIAA Division 2 sectional at Cudahy on Saturday.

The 200 team posted 2 minutes, 3.34 seconds, while the 400 unit came in with 4:27.82.

The 200 medley group of Pekar, Bednarz, Jungers and Rowe took 11th (2:16.9), while Elliot placed 12th in the 500 freestyle (6:07.65).

The Panthers scored 47 points for 12th place in the sectional, which ended their 2011 season.
