Sports Wrapups: Nov. 29

Nov. 29, 2011 | 0 comments

Whitnall girls basketball

After a 66-46 loss to Cedarburg on Friday in the first game of the Brookfield East Holiday Tournament, the Falcons bounced back with a 52-42 triumph over the host team on Saturday.

Jackie Gruszka led the way with 14 points and two assists, while Rachael Shulta totaled 12 points and two assists, Ashley Markowiak 11 points and two steals, Elena Busalacchi 10 rebounds and Lizzy Menden two steals.

"We had some nice transition baskets," coach Keith Larson said, "and we shot well."

That was not the case on Friday against Cedarburg, which bolted to a 13-3 lead after one quarter.

"They (the Bulldogs) were bigger and more physical," Larson said. "They had five three-point plays and a number of other offensive rebounds. This game did us some good, though."

Markowiak tallied 16 points, while Menden had eight and Lydia Pinscak and Shulta six apiece.

Greendale boys basketball

For three quarters on Saturday, the Panthers were in control of their season opener with Hartford.

In the fourth period, though, they were outscored 23-6 and wound up losing a 49-47 decision.

"Foul trouble caught up with us," coach Ryan Fiet said. "We also had some mental lapses with fouls, and we committed 12 turnovers in the fourth period. We played three quarters, but we have to learn to play a complete game."

There were some bright spots, as Greendale played solid half-court defense, according to Fiet, and netted eight 3-point goals. Mason Johnson and Matt Habeck each tallied 12 points, with Habeck hitting four from 3-point range, and Jacob Sisler added nine points.

The Panthers attempted just seven free throws to Hartford's 30.
