Franklin, Oak Creek softball
The Sabers got a one-hitter with 13 strikeouts from junior pitcher Annie Versnik in beating the Knights, 5-0, in a Southeast Conference game April 5.
Siera Spahiu went 4-for-4 with two doubles, one triple and two runs batted in for the Sabers (1-1 overall). The Sabers, who finished 10-10 last season, opened this campaign with a 13-1 Southeast loss to Kenosha Bradford April 3.
"It's hard to tell how the season is going to go," head coach Dylan Keller said. "We have six underclassmen on the team, which is a lot, but they are tough and work hard in practice. The conference is very tough, but I think we are one of the top teams right now."
Oak Creek, which fell to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in Southeast play, saw Alex Widenski (four strikeouts and two walks) take the loss.
The Knights, who were 5-13 last season, fell to Racine Park, 2-1, April 3, and to South Milwaukee, 9-7, April 2. They beat Pius XI, 13-4, March 29 as Katie Finn had four hits and three RBIs. Widenski got the victory with four strikeouts and two walks.
Greendale girls soccer
The Panthers earned their first victory of the season with a 1-0 double-overtime decision over defending Woodland Conference champion Pewaukee April 3.
In the 92nd minute, senior Lauren Rutkowski played a through ball from 25 yards to freshman Taylor Fendos, who was taken down inside the penalty box. Briana Pawlowski hit the penalty kick in the left corner to end the contest.
Sophomore goaltender Maddy Zastrow picked up her second shutout with six saves, including stopping several one-on-one situations.
Greendale improved to 1-1-1 with the triumph.
Greendale boys tennis
The Panthers launched the Woodland Conference season with a 7-0 victory over Greenfield April 3.
First singles player Matt Grieshop won, 6-1, 6-2, while the top doubles team of Brandon Guendel and Austin Lasch prevailed, 6-2, 6-2.
Oak Creek girls soccer
The Knights ran into a few roadblocks last week in falling to 3-2 overall as they were beaten by Waukesha North, 5-2, April 2 and then were blanked by Catholic Memorial, 4-0, April 4.
Brianna Reid and Mariah Ferri got the goals while Bianca Alarcon had an assist.
Whitnall boys tennis
The Falcons started the season with a 7-0 triumph over South Milwaukee April 3.
Among the winners were Andrew Dundas at first singles (6-2, 6-2) and the first doubles team of Jess Higgins and Jake Damro (6-2, 6-2).
"Team captains Dundas and Shane Murphy anchor a strong singles component," head coach Jose Rivera said, "while our young doubles teams continue to work hard and improve."
Whitnall girls soccer
The Falcons picked up a 5-0 triumph over Cudahy April 5 behind two goals from Mary Gaggioli and one apiece by Ashley Markowiak, Tina Gaggioli and Maddie Harycki.
Gabbie Weis added two assists for Whitnall, which improved to 2-2 on the season after dropping a 2-0 game to Shorewood April 3.
"Megan Regeth, Brittney Kenaston and Harycki have been exceptional as senior team captains and leaders," said head coach Robert Antholine.
