Sports Wrapups: June 15

Highlights of area high school sports

June 16, 2010 | 0 comments

Oak Creek soccer

Top-seeded Divine Savior Holy Angels shut out fourth-seeded Oak Creek, 8-0, on June 10 in the WIAA Division 1 girls soccer sectional semifinal at DSHA.

Lauren Handzlik scored three goals and handed out one assist, Ingred Mortonson scored twice and added two assists, Kylie Nordness scored twice and Rachel Koontz added a goal and an assist to lead the Dashers. Greta Weber had DSHA's other assist.

DSHA jumped out to a 6-0 lead and blew the Knights away quickly, with three goals in 10 minutes.

Whitnall golf

Whitnall's Michael Mathwick concluded his season with a 21st-place finish in the WIAA Division 1 state meet at University Ridge in Verona.

Mathwick shot 77, 81 to finish plus-14. Middleton's Mike Schilling was the state medalist, shooting 73-53 to finish plus-4.

Oak Creek baseball

Senior Tyler Zemla pretty much did it all in the 1-0 win over Brookfield East on Monday evening.

He was lights out as the starting pitcher, striking out nine and surrending only three hits in a complete-game effort.

But he had little help as East pitcher Jake Schaffhauser was just as dominant, pitching eight scoreless innings and striking out four.

That's when Zemla took it upon himself to win the game with his bat. Zelma's walk-off solo home run ended the game in dramatic fashion for the Knights in a battle between two teams trying to stay in the upper-half of the Greater Metro Conference.

This was the first game of a two-game series between the schools. The result of Tuesday's second game was after press deadline.

After Zemla's heroic victory, the Knights (9-4, 4-3 GMC) moved into a tie for second place with Brookfield Central, just a week after sitting in last place in the GMC standings.

The Knights have two more conference games this week beginning today with a 5:30 p.m. home contest against Milwaukee Marquette. They have a return game with the Hilltoppers on Friday before competing in the South Milwaukee Wood Bat Tournament on Saturday.

Oak Creek, on a five-game winning streak, also trounced West Allis Central, 8-0, and 8-3, in back-to-back games last week.

Greendale baseball

The Panthers pitching wasn't bad, but their bats have to improve, especially with a busy schedule this week.

Greendale (3-8, 2-2 Woodland Conference), which lost 3-1 to Franklin in its only game last week, has four conference games in four days.

They played a doubleheader against South Milwaukee on Tuesday and they travel to Greenfield at 4 p.m. today before finishing the week with a game against New Berlin Eisenhower at 5 p.m. on Friday.

Junior Andrew Brees led a quiet Panthers offense going 2 for 4 against the Sabers. Junior Mark Liedersbach pitched a complete game and took the loss despite throwing five scoreless innings.

The fourth inning hurt them when the Sabers scored their only runs.

Whitnall baseball

After 16 days off, the Falcons resumed play this week.

And all their games are against teams in the top-half of the Woodland Conference.

Whitnall (5-2, 2-1 Woodland Conference) played at first-place New Berlin Eisenhower on Tuesday after press deadline. They come home for a 5 p.m. contest today against surging New Berlin West, a team that has won its last four games.

After that game, they play Cudahy, the Woodland Conference Blue's second-place team. The Falcons end the week hosting the eight-team Wood Bat Tournament, opening against Catholic Memorial at 8 a.m.
