Star-studded track and field results

Oak Creek's Saez takes second; Franklin's Fons claims fourth

Individual championships were within reach for two local athletes at the WIAA boys and girls state track and field meet last weekend in La Crosse.

Saez's second spot in shot put

Oak Creek junior Rafael Saez was second in the shot put at 58-feet, 11 inches, a personal best.

"This is such a good feeling, because the competition is so good here," Saez said. "You never know who's going to do what. (The competition) gets you psyched up and really makes you want to throw farther. It makes you want to do better than you think you can."

With his runner-up finish in the shot put and his eighth-place finish in the discus, Saez helped the Knights claim 30th.

Saez, who missed qualifying for state by ¾ of an inch last season, came up short of champion Mike Hardy of Kimberly, who won the event with a throw of 60-6.

"To finish second after missing out by so little last year is really a big achievement for me," Saez said. "There was a lot of adrenaline going through me."

"Next year, I'm hoping to take (first)."

Fons takes fourth in 3,200-meter

While Saez has another year to improve on his finish, Franklin senior Lindsay Fons ended her high school track and field career with a bang.

She finished fourth in the 3,200-meter race with a personal best of 11:00.2.

It was more than a 15-second improvement from her time at sectionals. Arrowhead's Gabby Levac won the race with a time of 10:47.22.

Fons' performance led Franklin to a 39th-place finish as a team.

Fons is a four-year letter winner with the track and cross country programs and will run at UW-River Falls while majoring in human health performance next year.

"I wasn't sure I could do this well, but my coach had a lot of faith in me," Fons said. "The temperature (warm and a bit windy) didn't get too uncomfortable until the second-to-last lap. I tried to stay with the lead group, but I got the mile split I wanted, and I just went from there."
