Whitnall golf
Michael Mathwick tied for first in the Division 2 portion of the Ashenfelter Invitational at Riverside Golf Course on Saturday.
Mathwick shot a 2-over-par 74, a total matched only by Eric Wolfe of Cuba City.
The Falcons were sixth of 17 teams, 12 strokes behind first-place Catholic Memorial.
That effort capped a great week for Mathwick, who was also the meet medalist with a 1-under-par 35 in a Woodland Conference West mini-meet at New Berlin Hills on April 29. The Falcons were second at 173, eight strokes behind New Berlin West.
Whitnall boys track
Thrower Scott Erickson shot up the state honor roll at the Waukesha Northstar Classic on Saturday. He's joined by several of his teammates.
His winning effort of 160 feet, 4 inches in the discus is the 11th-best effort in the state across all divisions this year and helped the Falcons take fourth of 15 teams with 66 points.
A pair of Whitnall relays also make their debut on the honor roll this week after their performances Saturday. The 400-meter unit of Bob Grim, Jacob Streim, Ben Schaefer and Nikolai Miskov now owns the 10th-best state time of 44.07 seconds, which was good for first Saturday. The same four runners finished third in the 800 in 1 minute, 32.76 seconds, good for 17th in the state.
In addition, Jake Lehmann picked up a win in the 800 in 2:01.43, and two Falcons were third in their events: Erickson in the shot put (49-0) and Grim in the 200 (23.23).
At a quadrangular at Franklin on April 27, Whitnall won eight events to win the meet.
Lehmann was a two-time winner in the 400 (52.09) and 800 (2:04.02), as was Erickson in the shot put (51-7¼) and discus (144-1).
Franklin track
Farrah Brown and Jessica Zeman claimed the top two spots in the pole vault and Derek McElroy won in the 600-meter run at the Waukesha Northstar Classic on Saturday.
Brown won her event with a 10-6, followed by Zeman's 9-0.
The Sabers' girls team also had two top-three efforts in the triple jump. Caitria Thiel was second with a 32-4¾ and Katelyn Thomas (32-2) was third.
McElroy won the 600 in 1:25.97. Also placing near the top of his event was John Janicek, who ran second in the 400 in 51.92, less than tenth of a second behind Milwaukee Tech's Darius King-Dright.
Lindsay Fons was among the multi-event winners at a meet the Sabers hosted April 27.
The girls won thanks to Fons' victories in the 1,600 (5:17.81) and 800 (2:25.29), a pair of wins by Thomas in the 100 hurdles (17.57) and triple jump (31-4) and solo wins from Jenny Eickhorst in the 400 (1:04.22), Brown in the pole vault (10-0).
Oak Creek soccer
More than halfway though the regular season, the Knights continue to win just as often as they lose.
Oak Creek began this week 5-5-2 overall.
In a 2-0 home win over Milwaukee King, Brianna Reid scored a pair of second-half goals with an assist from Gina Martini on the first one.
One night earlier at Menomonee Falls, Reid tallied a goal in the 27th minute to tie the score at 1-1, but the host scored twice more before intermission and won, 3-1.
The Knights also battled Franklin to a 1-1 tie at Franklin in a match ended due to darkness. The tie put Oak Creek's league record at 0-2-1 as of Monday.
Greendale golf
Jordan Stachowski led the Panthers at a pair of Woodland mini-meets last week.
Stachowski's 39 and Nolan Benoit's 42 helped the Panthers to third at New Berlin Hills on April 29.
Stachowski and Steve Gradinjan both tallied 42s two days earlier as the Panthers tied for second with Pewaukee two days earlier at Deer Creek in New Berlin.
On Saturday, the Panthers were seventh at the 18-team Ashenfelter Invite at Riverside Golf Course in Janesville. Benoit shot his best round of the season, a 79.
Greendale soccer
The Panthers ran their conference winning streak to five straight entering this week thanks to narrow wins over Whitnall and South Milwaukee.
Against Whitnall, Greendale's Briana Pawlowski snapped a 1-1 tie with her goal in the 61st minute and the Panthers held on for a 2-1 home victory April 26.
Katrina Knezic gave Greendale an early lead with a first-half goal.
In a 1-0 win at home over South Milwaukee on April 29, Haley Serketich scored in the 77th minute to snap a scoreless tie and goalkeeper Mary Merg registered her third conference shutout to help Greendale improve to 5-1 in league play, entering this week.
The Panthers lost a pair of nonconference matches: 1-0 to Greendale on Friday and 3-0 at Brookfield Central on Saturday.
Franklin tennis
At the two-day Greendale tournament Friday and Saturday, Franklin went 3-2 with wins over Martin Luther, Madison Edgewood and Arrowhead and losses to the host school and Appleton Xavier.
The second doubles team of Zach Bartels and Kyle Hoffmann went 5-0 and the third doubles unit of Patrick Donovan and Jake Ruetz were 4-0. Singles players Jacob Kossoris, Evan Bauer and Mitch DeMario were all 3-2.
Franklin also split a pair of Southeast Conference duals, suffering their first loss of the league season, 5-2, at home to Kenosha Tremper on April 27.
The Sabers lost three of four singles matches that night but bounced back to shut out Racine Park, 7-0, in Racine two days later.
Franklin soccer
It took longer than hoped, but the Sabers finally managed to notch a 'W' in the win column.
Sarah Devcich's goal in the 18th minute on a beautiful assist from Lexi Soich, was all the offense Franklin needed in a 1-0 road win at Greendale on Friday. The victory was the Sabers' first; they improved to 1-6-2 overall as of Monday.
The banged-up Sabers also managed a 1-1 tie at home with Oak Creek on April 27.
Soich scored in the 37th minute for Franklin, which began this week, 0-3-1 in the Southeast Conference.
In a 2-0 home loss to state runner-up Waukesha West on Friday, the Sabers were outshot, 24-4.
Whitnall softball
After consecutive losses to heavyweights New Berlin Eisenhower and Greenfield, the Falcons bounced back in a big way.
Carolyn Dudek allowed only two hits over seven shutout innings and knocked in a run in Whitnall's three-run fourth inning that carried the Falcons to a 3-0 win over host Greendale on Friday.
Dudek was solid two days earlier as well when she scattered three hits with six strikeouts and only one walk in her team's 2-1 win at South Milwaukee.
The host Rockets scored a run first, but Whitnall answered with lone runs in the fifth and sixth. Marie James' RBI fielder's choice scored the first run and in the sixth, Allison Barnhart led off with a triple to right-center field and scored on Danielle Starke's ground out.
The Falcons began this week 7-2 overall and in conference.
Greendale track
A 1-2 finish in the 100 hurdles by Leslie Blazer and Emily Klar and Blazer's effort in the high jump carried the Greendale girls to fourth at the 11-team Pewaukee Altheimer Invitational on Friday.
Blazer won the 100 hurdles in 17.32 seconds, just ahead of Klar's 17.68. Blazer was also second in the high jump with a 5-0.
Haley Unger, a sophomore, was the runner-up in the 100 in 13.77, and freshman Chelsey Heiden was third in the 3,200 in 12:21.21. Unger also placed third in the long jump with a 14-9½.
For the boys, who were fifth, Matt Pulizos was second in the discus with a 136-1 and Jordan Dominiak was runner-up in the shot put with a 43-1. Both Panthers were behind Pewaukee's Derek Watt who had distances of 140-5 and 54-11½, respectively.
At their own invitational April 27, the Panthers won three combined individual events as the boys placed fourth and the girls fifth of eight.
Victorious Panthers included Blazer in the 100 hurdles (16.94), Tim Davis in the pole vault (13-0) and Heiden in the 800 (2:32.10). Runners-up were Dominiak in the shot put (44-4), Brenna Patterson in the 3,200 (13:21.15), Joe Pokrzywa in the 110 hurdles (17.44), Pulizos in the discus (133-4) and Joel Sirus in the long jump (20-3½).
Whitnall girls track
The Falcons won six events at a triangular at Franklin on April 27.
Lauryn Jashinsky, Meredith Heller and Jenny Lawton registered a sweep of the top three spots in the 300-meter hurdles with Jashinsky's time of 52.49 leading the way.
Other winners were Rachel Stave in the 200 (27.58), Leah Windt in the 3,200 (12:27.61), Haley Just in the high jump (4-6), Heller in the long jump (14-9½) and the 1,600 relay (4:19.14).
Whitnall tennis
Greendale and New Berlin Eisenhower dropped Whitnall below .500 in conference play at 3-4 as of Monday.
Alex Dundas, the Falcons' first singles player, won, 6-1, 6-1, for Whitnall's only flight victory in a 6-1 loss to visiting Greendale on April 27.
Two days later at the Princeton Club in New Berlin, Dundas won again, this time, 6-2, 6-3, over Praveen Sankrithi, but the Falcons were edged, 4-3.

The Falcons were clipped by two hot teams in the Woodland Black Division last week
In a 2-1 loss at Greendale, Ashley Markowiak scored her fourth goal of the season with an assist by Dana Steffen that tied the score at 1-1, but Greendale snapped the two minutes later in the 61st minute.
Against New Berlin Eisenhower, a team tied for first in the division with Wauwatosa West, Whitnall's Sara Mogensen had two first-half goals and Steffen had a goal and an assist to tie the Lions, 3-3, at halftime, but the Falcons were unable to hold that momentum and lost, 7-3, April 29.
Whitnall dropped to 2-4 in league play.
Greendale softball
A busy week yielded positive results for the Panthers.
Greendale snapped a three-game losing streak with an 11-1 blowout win at Cudahy on April 26.
Andrea Waldera allowed only three hits and a walk with five strikeouts for the win.
Jocelyn Binkowski pitched an equally impressive game the next day, allowing only two hits over five innings in Greendale's 13-0 win at Wauwatosa West.
Lauren Clasen was 4-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs and April Dix drove in a pair.
Greendale suffered a 2-0 loss at Whitnall on April 29, and split a pair of games at the Waukesha West Tournament on Saturday, beating New Berlin West, 6-2, but falling to the host school, 7-4.
Greendale improved to 7-5 overall as of Monday.
Greendale tennis
Greendale went 3-2 in its six-team invite Saturday, picking up wins over Arrowhead, Franklin and Martin Luther, but losing to Madison Edgewood and Appleton Xavier.
The Panthers also improved to 4-0 in league duals with a 6-1 win at Whitnall on April 27 and a 7-0 shutout at South Milwaukee on April 29.
