April 13, 2010 | 0 comments

Franklin track

Three Sabers turned in top-15 efforts at the Wisconsin Track and Field Association Indoor Championships at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on Saturday.

Jessica Zeman cleared 9 feet, 6 inches with a personal-best effort in the pole vault that placed her ninth.

Lindsay Fons, in her first race of the season, was 11th in the 1,600-meter run at 5 minutes, 24.65 seconds, and Caitria Thiele took 12th in the triple jump with a 31-9.

In addition, Katelyn Thomas was the fastest freshman hurdler at the meet and placed 27th in the 55 hurdles in 9.93.

For the boys, Lance Baretz was 21st in the 55 dash (6.91) and Nikolai Grabowski ran 25th in the 800 (2:07.09).

Greendale soccer

The Panthers' offense remained missing in action for a second straight match.

After opening the season with a 2-0 loss to Kenosha Bradford on March 31, Greendale lost to visiting Kettle Moraine, 1-0, Friday.

Kettle Moraine's Melissa Leister scored the match's lone goal in the eighth minute.

Goal keeper Mary Merg made 13 saves for Panthers (0-2), who managed just one shot on goal.

Whitnall tennis

The Falcons will have all new doubles team when the season kicks off at the Muskego Quad on Saturday.

All three units from a year ago were comprised of seniors that helped Whitnall take fourth in the Woodland Conference.

Coach Dan Schifano, in his fifth year in the program, expects his team to be strong in all four singles flights as well as at first doubles.

Andy Krawczyk, a four-year starter, is the team leader, along with returning letter winners Alex Dundas and Taylor Marino. Krawczyk and Dundas are co-captains. Andrew Dundas is also expected to have a strong season, according to Schifano.

Franklin tennis

Plenty of players have returned to the defending Southeast Conference dual and tournament champion Sabers.

Leading the way are Brad Heale and CJ Malek, the team's top doubles team that lost in the third round of the state tournament a year ago.

The second doubles team will be comprised of Zach Bartels and Kyle Hoffman, but the third set was undecided as of Monday, according to coach Gail Champion.

Jacob Kossoris, Evan Bauer and Mitch DeMario will make up the first three flights of singles action and a host of players are in the mix four the last one.

Franklin, which will compete with Kenosha Tremper for supremacy in the SEC this spring, lost Frankie Giuffre, Nathan Fons and Omar Dakwar to graduation. Giuffre is now playing at Carroll University.
