Franklin wrestling

The Sabers' quest to return to the state semifinals for a second straight year was turned back by West Allis Central on Friday.

The Bulldogs, making their first state appearance since 2000, won seven straight matches early on and then finished with four consecutive victories en route to a 42-12 blowout of the Sabers in a WIAA Division 1 Team State quarterfinal at the University of Wisconsin Fieldhouse in Madison.

Franklin jumped out to a 9-0 lead behind Colin DeClark's 6-5 win over Derek Sadler at 125 and Chris Clapper's pin of Zach Werner at 130.

But then the wheels fell off. The Sabers lost every match from 135 to 189. Four of those matches were decided by three points.

Jordan Herrmann snapped the losing skid with an 8-4 win over Jesse Rodriguez at 215, but by then, Franklin trailed, 24-12, with four matches to go.

Central sealed the win with consecutive pins at 285 and 103, and put the exclamation mark on the victory when Jake Sargent beat Sam Kortes, 8-6, at 119. Kortes was fifth at the individual tournament one week earlier.

Franklin was making its seventh tournament appearance. The Sabers, who finished 16-5 this season, are now 1-7 all-time in state duals.

Oak Creek girls basketball

Oak Creek's fast start carried the Knights to a 47-39 win at Kenosha Tremper in the regular-season finale March 3.

The Knights outscored the Trojans, 29-16, in the first half en route to the 12-point victory.

Angela Rodriguez returned from injury and scored 14 points, matching teammate Ashley Luke for the game's high. Rodriguez had missed six straight games and nine of her team's last 12 with a partially torn ankle tendon.

Cydney Weisflog chipped in nine points for the Knights, who finished in fourth place at 8-6 in the Southeast Conference, one game behind third-place Franklin.

Greendale girls basketball

Mary Merg (19 points) and Lauren Piotrowski (14) combined to outscore host South Milwaukee in Greendale's 42-32 win in both teams' final game of the regular season March 3.

It was the 17th time Merg led Greendale in scoring this season.

The Panthers outscored the Rockets, 30-13, in the second and third quarters combined to pull away for the win.

Greendale finished 12-5 in the Woodland Conference, tied for second place with Wauwatosa West, but four games behind conference champion New Berlin Eisenhower.

Franklin girls basketball

Diana Mantey's season-high 17 points carried Franklin to a 68-42 victory at Racine Park on March 4.

The win kept the Sabers in third place and one game ahead of Oak Creek in the final league standings with a 9-5 record.

Mantey scored 15 of her points on five 3-pointers.

In addition to Mantey's outburst, Taylor Atkinson tallied 15 points and Jenna Coenen chipped in 11 as 10 Sabers scored in the blowout.

Franklin led, 35-12, at halftime.
