Sports Wrapups: Feb. 9

Feb. 9, 2010 | 0 comments

Franklin gymnastics

The undefeated Franklin co-op topped its season-best score again, this time with a 143.9, to win a triangular at Mukwonago on Feb. 4.

The co-op's Jenna Renner won the vault with a 9.45, Lauren Zurowski claimed the floor with a 9.5 and Sammie Olson took the bars with her 9.1. Zurowski had been limited with an injury in recent weeks but managed to also take second on the vault with a 9.25. Renner, who was injured earlier this season, was runner-up in the all-around with a 35.875.

The co-op was without Erin Honerlaw, who usually scores well on beam and bars.

"The team is starting to really look great on vault and floor," Franklin coach Katie Moore said. "We have a bit of work to do on the fine-tuning of bars and, of course, we need to stay on the beam. We took falls in two of five routines Thursday. At this point in the season, falls on the beam can be disastrous to a team score."

Melanie Pearson is expected to return from injury Saturday when the team returns to Mukwonago for the Nordentoft Invite at 10 a.m.

"It will be fun to see where we land with all hands on deck," Moore said. "We have some pretty high goals this season and every meet from this point forward is a stepping stone to achieving them. I think the girls are ready for the challenge."

Arrowhead (136.75) and Mukwonago (135.9) also competed.

Greendale girls basketball

Greendale extended its winning steak to nine games with a 52-28 home win against Greenfield on Friday.

The Panthers improved to 10-3 in conference (12-4 overall) and will face first-place New Berlin Eisenhower (15-1, 12-1) for an important Woodland Conference Black Division matchup Feb. 12.

Greendale's Mary Merg led all scorers with 19 points and is averaging 17.8 over her last five games. Lauren Piotrowski had 12.

Franklin wrestling

The Sabers sent seven wrestlers to the finals at the Southeast Conference Tournament at Racine Horlick on Saturday, but only Adam Langowski walked away with a league title.

Langowski defeated Oak Creek's Josh Regazzi, 8-2, in the championship tilt at 160 pounds. Six of his teammates were less fortunate. Sam Kortes (112), Colin DeClark (119), David Cabral (125), Chris Clapper (13), Adam Stelloh (135) and Brenden Butler (285) all lost their first-place matches as Franklin took third at the eight-team meet behind Muskego and Kenosha Tremper.

Franklin also closed out the dual season with an exciting 24-22 home win over Tremper on Feb. 3 to finish the league season 6-1, behind only unbeaten Muskego.

Cabral and Kyle Smith had key pins for the victors.

Oak Creek wrestling

Two Knights wrestled for conference titles at Horlick on Saturday, but both settled for second place.

Kyle Wey lost to Muskego's Jordan Gruettner, 12-6, in the finals at 189, and Josh Regazzi fell, 8-2, to Franklin's Adam Langowski.

Oak Creek finished fourth.

Greenfield/Greendale swimming

Jack Lennertz won both the 50-yard freestyle in 22.58 seconds and the 100 butterfly in 52.40 to highlight the PantherHawks' four-win day that resulted in third place at the Woodland Conference Meet at Greenfield on Saturday.

Also victorious for the co-op were Matt Jungers in the 200 individual medley (1:59.11) and Mike Lucchessi in the 100 free (48.27).

Greenfield/Greendale tallied 378 points, third to Shorewood's 474 and New Berlin's 451 at the eight-team meet.

Tom Miller, Zach Hogan, Shaun Fleischhacker and Jeff Jacobs turned in lifetime bests for the co-op at the meet.

Coach Dale Schrank said his team has been distracted with the opening of its new pool and hopes to put that behind them with the WIAA sectional at Greenfield on Saturday on the horizon.

"I hope that as we approach the final two weeks of the season that we can keep our minds on what we really need to be focused on," he said.

Franklin swimming

Despite finishing last of eight teams, the Sabers earned the same number of individual Southeast Conference titles as meet-champion and host Racine Case did Saturday.

Franklin's Josh Lefeber won the 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes, 2 seconds and the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.89 to lead the Sabers.

Case won the meet with 439 points; Franklin had 181. Oak Creek was sixth with 225 and was one of three teams that did not win an event.

Franklin boys basketball

Franklin sank 10 3-pointers, including six from Matt Krueger, in a 74-43 road win at Oak Creek on Friday.

Franklin's Krueger (20 points), Brett Ksobiech (12), Nick Romanowski (12) and Trevor Theissen (10) all scored in double-figures for the Sabers, who outscored the Knights, 41-18, in the second half.

Three nights earlier, Franklin (8-9, 5-5) lost an overtime thriller, 75-73, to visiting Racine Case.

Romanowski led all players with 32 points and 17 rebounds.

Case hit a 3-pointer tie the game with 1.7 seconds left in regulation. Romanowski's desperation halfcourt shot hit the rim.

In overtime, Franklin trailed by two and missed a contested layup with 7 seconds left.

Five Case players scored more than 11 points, led by Najee Farr's 15.

Oak Creek girls basketball

The Knights' Cydney Weisflog (13) and Ashley Luke (10) combined for 23 points in a 57-40 loss at Franklin on Friday.

Despite shooting 13-of-15 from the free-throw line, Oak Creek could not overcome Franklin's six 3-pointers.

The Knights' Angela Rodriguez did not play and is out for at least three weeks with an injured ankle. The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee recruit and the squad's lone senior injured the ankle Jan. 12 and missed three of six games before Friday.

Rodriguez scored 13 points in a 61-48 loss at Kenosha Bradford on Feb. 2.

In that loss, the Red Devils outscored the Knights, 23-11, in the third quarter.

Luke had a team-high 19 points.

Whitnall swimming

Sophomore Nick Ratkowski's strong efforts in the 50 and 100 frees highlighted the Falcons' day at the Woodland Conference Meet at Greenfield on Saturday.

Ratkowski swam fifth in the 50 in 23.85 and sixth in the 100 in 52.73, the only top-six swims for Whitnall, which was sixth of eight teams.

Greendale co-op hockey

Ros Zvarych, Michael Yablong and Brett Pokrzewinski scored first-period goals and Pokrzewinski added two more in the third as the Greendale Ice Force held on for a 5-4 win over Kenosha Bradford/Tremper at Wilson Park on Feb. 3.

The two teams meet again in a WIAA regional semifinal on Feb. 16 at Wilson, time to be determined. Greendale (9-10-1) is seeded eighth; Kenosha is ninth.

Whitnall girls basketball

Wauwatosa West's stifling defense limited Whitnall to just three first-half points as the host Trojans cruised to a 37-20 victory Friday, avenging a 35-33 loss to the Falcons on Jan. 21.

West's Jackie Glaser led all players with nine points in the low-scoring affair that included just 20 made baskets and combined 5-for-18 free-throw shooting.

The loss was the sixth in seven games for the Falcons (5-10, 5-8).

Greendale boys basketball

Greendale's offensive woes continued with a pair of recent losses.

The Panthers managed just 30 points in a 59-30 loss at Greenfield on Friday, three days after losing to visiting Slinger, 52-38. Greendale (5-13, 3-10) has now scored 38 or fewer points in three straight games, all losses.

Jacob Merk scored 13 points against Slinger.

Oak Creek boys basketball

The Knights nearly knocked off visiting Kenosha Bradford, 48-44, but the Red Devils' Zack Akina scored 24 points to prevent Oak Creek from earning its first conference win Feb. 2.

Oak Creek (2-15, 0-10) outscored Bradford, 12-7, in the second quarter to tie it at halftime.

The Knights' Nick Stout scored 17 points. He had 14 points in a 74-43 loss to visiting Franklin three nights later.

Greendale/St. Thomas More wrestling

The co-op's 145-pounder Chandler Gayan went 2-2 to place fifth at the Woodland Conference Tournament at Whitnall on Saturday.

Gayan started his day with a loss but ended it with a pin of Cudahy/St. Francis' Tyler Ohlendorf in 1:34 in the fifth-place match.

Greendale/St. Thomas More's Sam Walton (125 pounds), Tim Davis (140) and AJ Sciano (189) were all sixth.

Wild hockey

The Wild co-op came close to ending its season-long losing streak but lost, 4-3, to the Whitefish Bay co-op at the Pettit Ice Center on Feb. 3.

It was the Wild's second one-goal loss this season.

Alex Sommerfeld scored twice and Ryan Regeth once for the Wild (0-18), who did all their scoring in the third period.

The Wild also lost, 5-1, at Waunakee on Friday.
