In his ninth year as head coach of the Franklin boys, Jerome Missiaen has a veteran squad he will rely on heavily this fall.
Leading the pack is first-team all-conference runner senior Phillip Guilbault, who was sixth in the Southeast Conference race a year ago. Also back are seniors Tyler Jensen, James Pitcher, Kevin Dinh and Lee Smith and junior Will Campbell.
"We have seven seniors on the team where four of them are in their fourth year and two others have three years of experience," Missiaen said. "The only impact runner we lost last season was Derek (McElroy, who was 50th at state a year ago).
The Franklin girls return 25 athletes from a year ago, including five from last year's third-place SEC varsity squad. Among those is sophomore Jenny Eickhorst, who turned in the fifth-fastest time in school history a year ago en route to a state-tournament berth.
Junior tri-captain Hannah Timm is coming off an injury and sophomores Emma Klein, Katelyn Salzburger and Katelyn Thomas also return after a solid summer of training.
Among the key newcomers is freshman Allie Fons, the younger sister of school-record holder Lindsay Fons.
Golf
Behind the hot shooting of Taylor Chase, the Sabers got the 2010 campaign off to a solid start.
Chase shot a 92 to take third and carry Franklin to a win at the eight-team Oakwood Invitational on Aug. 19. The Sabers tallied a 284, 10 strokes better than second-place Kenosha Tremper.
Chase was second to only Ashley Henning of Racine Park (86) and Marissa Geyer of Racine Case (90).
On Monday, the Sabers took fifth at a 20-team tournament at Wanaki as the best-ball team of Katelyn Heimbruch and Niki Quirk was third with an 89 and the scramble team of Amanda Cornell and Samantha Hessil placed fourth with an 82.
Taylor Wenzel was the medalist with a 40 to lead Franklin to a 199-236 Southeast Conference win over Muskego at South Hills on Aug. 17.
Soccer
After opening the season with a 2-0 loss at Sun Prairie on Aug. 17, the Sabers rebounded to tie Milwaukee Ronald Reagan College Prep, 2-2, at home the next day.
Franklin received second-half goals from James Yang and Richard Park.
Tennis
The Sabers opened the season at the competitive Waukesha South Invite on Friday and Saturday and settled for just one win in five tries.
Sanjana Segu went 4-0 as part of the Sabers' fourth doubles team and the third doubles team of Kayla Plath and Shannon Murawski finished 4-1.
Abby Kass, Ensley Gossett, Morgan Mastrostefano, Megan Hammernick and Suzy Mihaly earned their first varsity victories.
"Although we were 1-4 on the weekend, this was highest level of competition we have gone up against during an invite, and we were in every meet until one of the last two matches," Franklin coach Jon Vogt said. "We picked up some key wins that will pay large dividends down the line during sectionals."
The Sabers defeated Rhinelander, 5-2, but lost to the host school, Madison East, Sheboygan North and Racine Prairie.
