Take your pick of July 4 festivities
Parades, Franklin Idol and bed races help light up holiday weekend
Franklin, Greendale, Hales Corners and Oak Creek all will celebrate the nation's independence in their own ways this weekend. Here are some of the events on tap:
Franklin
The three-day Franklin Civic Celebration at Lions Legend Park, behind City Hall at 9229 W. Loomis Road, kicks off Friday.
The festival is open from 5 to 11:30 p.m. Friday, noon to 11:30 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday. The event features food, carnival rides, children's activities and local bands.
Tours of Payne and Dolan Quarry will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday. Transportation will be provided from the festival grounds to the quarry.
The eighth edition of Franklin Idol will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday. Contestants ages 18 and older will sing karaoke music and be judged on talent, style and crowd appreciation.
The third-annual arm wrestling contest will be held from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday.
The children's parade will be held at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, with the main parade at 11 a.m. The parade starts at Loomis Road and Forest Hill Avenue, proceeds north on Loomis, then turns right on Drexel Avenue to the Fire Station.
Parade attendees should plan to come earlier this year as parking will be limited due to road construction, and they may want to bring a lawn chair. (There will be no bleachers.)
Fireworks will be held at 9:30 p.m.
Greendale
Greendale's Independence Day celebration begins Friday at Gazebo Park, Broad Street and Southway.
American Legion Post 416 will hold a corn roast from 4 to 10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Gazebo Park. During the same time, the Greendale Lions Club will stage its food and beer garden.
New Revue will play at 6 p.m. Friday, The Andrews at 6 p.m. Saturday and Marydel Rae Duo at 2 p.m. Sunday.
The village also has several events scheduled for Sunday:
The public reading of the Declaration of Independence will be held at 10:15 a.m. at the flag pole at Village Hall, 6500 Northway.
The parade begins at 11:30 a.m. at Northway and Grange Avenue, proceeding to Broad Street and ending at Greendale High School, 6801 Southway. The children's parade lines up at 11 a.m. at St. Thomas of Canterbury Church.
An ice cream give-away will be held at Jaycee Park immediately following the parade.
The Greendale Village Concert Band will perform at 7 p.m.
Fireworks will be held at dusk.
Hales Corners
Several events are planned in Hales Corners on Sunday.
The Firecracker Four Run will be held at 8 a.m. at Hales Corners Park, 5765 S. New Berlin Road.
An antique and classic car show will be held at Holz Chevrolet, 5961 S. 108th Place, throughout the day.
Children's parade judging, children's games and Culver's custard are on tap at Hales Corners Elementary School, 11319 W. Godsell Ave.
An open house at the Fire Station, 10000 W. Forest Home Ave., featuring blood pressure readings, misting tent and children's activities, will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Participants can drop off pies for the baking contest at 11 a.m., with judging at noon, in the Ben Hunt Room of the Hales Corners Library, 5885 S. 116th St.
The Ben Hunt Cabin open house will be held from noon to 3 p.m. at the cabin, in front of the library. An open house at the Hale Summer Kitchen, in Cobb Park across from the library, will also be held from noon to 3 p.m.
Bed races will be held at 1:30 p.m. at 113th Street and Janesville Road.
The main parade, featuring Olympic gymnast Alyson Dudek as marshal, will be held at 4 p.m.
DJ entertainment will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. at Hales Corners Park, and fireworks will be held at dusk.
Oak Creek
The parade will begin at 9 a.m. Sunday at Edgewood Elementary School, 8545 S. Shepard Ave., and proceed south to East Middle School, 9330 S. Shepard Ave.
Following the parade are ice cream and Cracker Jacks at the American Legion Post, 9327 S. Shepard Ave., and games run by Oak Creek cheerleaders, including the penny scramble, sack races, water balloon toss and golf.
Tee-ball games begin at 1 p.m., with baseball games at 2 p.m. and softball at 3 p.m.
Fireworks will be held at dusk.

Remember - In Franklin it is against the rules for people in the parade to use water pistols on the crowd. But there are no rules for the crowd to use water pistols on the people in the parade.

This would be a great time to let our city leaders know that they are all wet on spending our tax dollars.
