Field of four set for Franklin school race

Incumbent pulls in the most votes in Tuesday primary

Feb. 22, 2012 | 31 comments

Franklin - One incumbent will advance in the April 3 Franklin Public School Board election while another will not.

With six candidates vying for two three-year seats, four will advance to the spring general election. Member Janet Evans was the top vote-getter in Tuesday's six-way primary race. Voter turnout was 11 percent.

Unofficial results are:

Janet Evans (inc.) 882

Don Petre 724

Aimee Schlueter 688

John Paul Thompson 459

David A. Works 409

Judith Bialk 320

It was the first time in more than 20 years that the school district needed a primary, with interest in running heightened by the district's need for a future facilities plan and a state budget that has forced administrators to rethink how resources are allocated.

Evans attributed her showing Tuesday to her conservative values and ability to consider the interests of all community members, those with and without children in public schools.

"I think the citizens clearly wants a board member who's willing to weigh the interests of the whole community," she said.

"I ask a lot of questions and I expect answers," she added. "I think the public respects a representative who's going to tell it like it is. That's what I do."

Election results remain unofficial until they are certified by the board of canvassers.

  1. In my estimation, this is the first time in 20 years that we need a new School Board and Administration… and the district does NOT need new facilities. What this district needs is lower taxes and a more academic education for our children. Our schools are being kept up and are clean and that’s all we need.

I am now asking all those who are on the School Board, in the Administration, and teachers who are Socialists to please resign. Let the true Americans take these positions. Americans who want Liberty, the Constitution, personal responsibility, and a good academic education for our children. I ask these true Americans to please step up and take these positions. Our country, our local communities, and the whole world have had enough of the progressive socialists who are taking our freedom away. We Tea Party, Patriots, whatever you want to call us, have had enough and we are now going to take our local communities back.

Some have said, “people won’t move into Franklin if we don’t have new facilities”. I say good, we have enough residents in Franklin right now. We don’t need new facilities, we need a good academic education for our children so Franklin kids are the smartest in the state! And we need the teachers who can produce this. We value these teachers more than anyone can say. We need teachers to build on each student’s individual talents and creativity and encourage it to the fullest. Prepare them to be wrong, and to not be frightened to be wrong. To know right from wrong, and an exploration of the arts and sciences and an understanding of the foundational tenets of our Judeo-Christian heritage, and what has made America great.

I applaud Janet Evans for her courage. I know she won’t let us down. Now she needs fellow School Board Members to join her so we have the best district in the state.
  2. I couldn't agree more that we need good academic education for our children. However, Franklin does need new/updated facilities...badly. Problem is we have paid so much in taxes already and all that we have to show for it are sub par facilities at best. Take a look around at other communities. Pewaukee is under going construction, Greendale has a beautiful PAC, South Milwaukee has a very nice rec building, Muskego has top notch facilities, and Greenfield recently upgrade what they had. Instead of just assuming my kids will go to Franklin High School I'm planning to look elswhere if faciliteis aren't improved.

    • Good... go!
    • Nice attitude. Are you using Mayor Barrett's line of reasoning, if you don't like it you can leave? I would think you should recognize there is a problem and it needs to be addressed. I hope Evans and Schlueter (hopefully they both get voted in) are able to address the problem at hand as fiscally responsible as they can. If they share your opinion this communitly and school board will continue to lag behind other communities.
    • Hey Mikey14.. Looking forward to see your name for a large donation to the cause. We need more people like you to voluntarily donate large sums of money to get those facility's built. I can see it now the Mikey14 Auditorium. Thanks Mikey!
    • Geez, write one comment on here and one person wants me to leave and another wants me to make a large donation. People need to settle down a bit.
With the amount we pay in taxes we should already be able to build/renovate the facilities. However, that's not the case. I would hope cutting spending would be a choice as well. If not I would be willing to pay more in taxes IF that translates into our kids getting a better education and having a better high school experience. Wouldn't that be investing in our kids?
Curious on what you think bmaersch. Not attacking in any way just generally curious.
    • @Mikey14,
      1) There is absolutely no proof that better school buildings or renovated facility's translate into our kids getting a better education.
      2) I have lived in this town for 23 years, have one daughter that has graduated FHS (with high honors) and gone on to be on the UWW business schools Deans List. In addition, I have a son in FHS with great grades also. So I ask you, do the facilities make the top students or the teachers?
      3) We all like NEW, I do, I am sure you do.... but ... If you are expecting everyone else in that lives in the Franklin School District, no matter what their financial situation, must dig deeper into their pocketbooks to achieve those NEW facility's just so your and my kids can have a "Better High School Experience" is awfully selfish. Remember that 75% of the tax paying residents do not have children going to Franklin Schools. Many are senior citizens who can barely make ends meet. Others have lost their jobs or have taken pay cuts to keep them.
      4) I have already paid once for our schools to be upgraded. I would rather see the money go into KEEPING educational programs and not new facilities.
  3. Well we have come down to 4 candidates. It seems the bloggers have already split them into 2 groups Thompson and Petre against Evans and Schlueter. I have always had a conservative view as I have grown old. I think what voters really need to do is look at the bigger picture then just the facilities issue. Taxes have gone up slowly over the years and now there is no room for increase without pushing people over the edge. Do upgrades need to be done or expansion of some sort, probably I'm not going to argue that part of the issue, it's how will it get done responsible. Mr. Petre has clearly stated early on, that massive improvements with new facilities with all the latest and greatest is what needs to be done. Then I recieved a flyer from him changing his tone and resorting to using Evans and Schlueter's platform which they have stated from the start "things need to be done with fiscal responsibilty". WOW do you think he learned his first platform wasn't working or is he the wolf in sheep's clothing. There are so many other things that will need to be addressed this year, Teachers benefits, State funding cuts and so many other things. My gut feeling is staying the same, Evans and Schlueter they have stayed consistent so far in this election unlike Mr.Petre who has already changed his platform. As for Thompson I still have yet to see his face, is he really a candidate or just a name on the ballot. So he is not an option. Evans and Schlueter are not the save all and the next coming of christ to solve all the problems, but I believe they will be honest and hear what the taxpayers are saying and truly voice are wants. Mr. Petre will clearly voice the wants of the teachers(hence he is one along with being a teacher union offical) and sports fans of Franklin. No thanks, children need and Education first before a football game.
  4. What I have found interesting in the past three years, is that beginning with her swearing in, I have watched superintendent Patz, school board president, Debbie Larson and school board vice president Jeff Traylor do everything within their power to try to make Evans look bad in the eyes of her constituents, doing everything within their power to silence her--pushing her to compromise her values, which she would not do. Her integrity especially frustrated Patz, who wants “his” board to appear united and like-minded to Franklin school district parents.

What's surprising, too, is the fact that this goes against the thinking of one of the Left’s heroes; prominent Socialist and American journalist Walter Lippmann, who said: “When everyone thinks the same, nobody is thinking.”
  5. I really appreciate Janet Evans’ comments. She truly gets it!

As a parent, I want my kids to have a great education and facilities. I don’t mind shelling out more money if it is truly needed, but don’t take advantage of me. I don’t want a school board that blindly gives the teacher’s union everything they request, no questions asked. Janet asks the right questions; she’s looking out for me as both a parent and a taxpayer.

Like Janet, Aimee Schlueter has stated she’s an advocate for the taxpayer, “I am also here as a taxpayer and citizen. Taxpayers need a representative that has their best interests at heart while still providing exceptional educational opportunities for the children.”

Don’t vote for Petre! He is a WEAC union leader and activist. He has a Recall Walker sign in his front yard, which tells me that he and I don’t see eye-to-eye.

Please, please vote for JANET EVANS and AIMEE SCHLUETER!
  6. The people that want shiny new facilities just amaze me. We don't need the best facilities or even the second best. We need functional, safe facilities that enable the schools to educate our kids.

A fancy facade or creative glass works is not going to help educate the kids. The amount learning going on in Franklin is no worse than Greendale, Greenfield, or that beautiful facility in Brookfield. Anyone who bases their assumption of education value by the exterior appearance, is one shallow individual who does not understand return on investment or simple economics for a community.

Feel good academics has given us a generation of kids who cannot do simple math in their heads and they cannot even give change at McDonald's without help from the computer. We need feel good facilities to boot.

I'd rather see existing facilities updated as long as they are structurally sound and can continue grow as technologies advance. That was whole point with 50 and 100 facility design years ago. There are several facilities in the downtown Milwaukee that used to be warehouses and foundries which are now high priced condos. That is the sort of thinking we need in our school board members.

In the April election, I'm voting for the candidates who are fiscally responsible and not the ones who are talking about needing massive improvements or brand new facilities.

  8. It's interesting watching your debate on facilities from Muskego. We had much the same type of discussions as you are. I wil say a couple of things as an ex-school board member in Muskego. Your community appears to be growing very quickly so you will need some space soon. We built a new middle school in 1999 and completely renovated our high school in 2001 which included 40 new classrooms, completely upgraded hvac, electrical, and sprinkler systems, a new gym, and a new 1,000 seat PAC to replace the 300 seat one. It turned out very good. Don't just sit on the sidelines. Participate in the discussions on the facilities committees and go to school board meetings.

    • What I see is we have a board that is working for the wrong people. The Franklin superintendent thinks he is the one with the final approval. The City of Franklin has 75 % of households who do not have children in this school systems, this according to the superintendent. I am one of those. I have no objection to providing a quality education for the children of Franklin. I just don't believe we need to build the biggest and best to do the job. We have candidates who are being supported and financially backed by outside supporters. This does not truly reflect the wants of the taxpayers. The elected board must be non-partisn and non-influenced by unions or other elected officals. They are here for the children first then the taxpayers paying the bill for this. Yes, do things need to be expanded or remodeled, probably the facailites are very outdated. The board and the superintendent must remember who is paying for it. Plus we have one candidate who is a teacher / teacher union offical can you really think he will be un-bias.
  9. Before people pass judgment on any of the candidates, get to know the candidates first. Talk with them, listen to their ideas, give them feedback about their platforms before you just go and blast them using blogs and chat rooms. To be honest, I only know one of the candidates who is currently running for the Franklin School Board and his name is Don Petre. I'm not here to blast the candidates that I don't know. Those types of antics are immature, cowardly and demonstrate ones limited cognitive ability. If you fall into that category, so sad. In Don Petre, you're getting an educated, open minded, fiscally responsible school board member who will lead your district into the 21st century. Get out and vote on April 3rd!

    • Let me understand something Mr. Minchk. You say that Mr. Petre is fiscally responsible yet he has posted responses confirming that he in fact supports the recall of Gov. Walker. In as much as he is the union treasurer for the Oak Creek Teachers Union it doesn't take a rocket scientist to make the next radical assumption that he wants Walker recalled and a democrat replace him in the hopes that the UNIONS can regain control of school and municipal budgets.

In what universe is that fiscally conservative?
    • hard to talk with them when they don't show up for open forums. Petre is a union officer with a recall Walker sign in his front yard. There is no hiding his point of view. He will say anything to get into office and then it's time for the taxpayers to watch their wallets. We already have Dr. Patz,Debbie Larson and Steve Traylor doing the unions bidding, we don't need another. He may be smart, he may be nice, but we all know where his loyalties lie. Let's not try to deny that. Is it possible to see who has contributed to his campaign? If so, the proof will be in the pudding.
    • open-minded, fiscally responsible... i can't stop laughing. sorry to be such a hater, but fiscally responsible????? really? he is against someone that is doing the fiscally responsible thing, Scott Walker. Why shouldn't the teachers pay towards their heatlhcare and retirements?? Still haven't had a good answer to that one. The money we are putting into the teachers accounts (why can't they pay the same percent as the taxpayers that pay them? Walker didn't go far enough) can be used to improve our facilities. Yes, we need more, but it's a start. Taj Mahal=no improvements= yes We could probably cut Dr. Patzs salary in half and put that towards some new upgrades too, he'd still be making a tidy sum.
  10. Who said this??...... "I wanted the Franklin School Board to have more members with a background in the field of education." Donald Petre! MORE members? Don't virtually all of the school board members have a connection to teaching? I think we need LESS members with an education background and MORE with a business background. How can more members with a background in education or being in a union make fair decisions when deciding benefits and budgets??

    • As a taxpayer, I believe that no member should be a current teacher or union member. There will be to much bias in their decision making. Lets face it, if your deciding on benefits and facilities for YOUR fellow workers, common sense would tell you that they will side on the fellow workers. Especially if your a union official, your always taking the stance that the teachers need better benefits and working conditions, that what unions are for( don't get me wrong unions are good for workers when used correctly). This board is already influenced to much by the administration and teachers. Mr. Petre is purely a union advocate, I would like to see his donation paperwork also. Since his stance is to remain publicly quite and only speak with teachers and his union, tells me his campaign is being run and funded by the union. I have yet to hear any responses from him on any blog to any question asked. If he is such a nice guy and open-minded what is he afraid of. Again a WOLF IN SHEEP'S CLOTHING. I ask of you Mr. Petre come out of your hiding and answer questions that need to be answered. Your not impressing anyone with your educated mind when you hide like you are. If you want my vote you need to answer questions from people who put you on the board not just your union co-workers.
