Districts put on another good ACT

Scores strong in college admission exam

Aug. 24, 2010 | 0 comments

School officials are still pouring over results of the ACT, the college admission test widely used in Wisconsin, but they largely said they are pleased with this year's results.

ACT tests students in English, math, reading and science to measure skills needed for freshman college coursework.

Franklin

Franklin High School's 2010 graduating seniors posted the highest English score in school history, and their composite score of 22.7 was the third-best ever, Principal Mike Cady said.

But Cady said that of all the results, he was most pleased about steady increases in the percentage of students ACT considered to be "college-ready."

Across all four subjects, the percentage of students hitting minimum benchmarks to be considered college-ready rose between 7 and 8 percent.

Combined with more students taking Advanced Placement classes, Cady feels the school is on the right track and he wants to see progress continue.

"Kids are challenging themselves more, and it's starting to show," he said. "We have more and more kids (college-ready) but we are certainly not satisfied."

Whitnall

While the scores were encouraging, Principal Tony Brazouski said he was happiest about participation - 184 (the highest-ever number) out of 230 took the exam.

Usually when that happens, scores tend to go down. But Whitnall actually saw a slight improvement in its composite score, from 22.4 to 22.5.

"We are extremely excited about the fact that we have begun to beat the statistical odds," Brazouski said.

Schools have made college- and career-readiness a focus in recent years, Brazouski said.

Greendale

The composite score dropped slightly compared to last year, from 24.4 to 24, though it still remained the best out of any school in the area and one of the best in the region.

Scores in each of the four subjects corresponded with that drop as they also dipped slightly from the previous year.

Superintendent William Hughes in a news release said the School Board, administration and teachers focus relentlessly on student achievement results such as the ACT.

"Understanding where our students are doing well and, more importantly, where we can do better to help them achieve is driving Greendale schools' reputation for strong student learning," he said.

Oak Creek-Franklin officials could not be reached for comment.
