Like many other school districts in the area, the Whitnall school property tax levy will not rise as much as originally anticipated, thanks to better-than-expected state aid estimates.
Whitnall administrators now project the tax levy rising about 7 percent, compared to the 9.8 percent rise in the preliminary budget the School Board approved in May.
According to state Department of Public Instruction estimates, the district will receive about $407,000 more in aid than administrators first budgeted.
Business Manager Amy Kohl said the district was as conservative as possible to avoid a repeat of last year, when state aid was unexpectedly cut by about 15 percent.
The School Board then proposed a double-digit percentage increase in the property tax levy to make up for the state aid cut, and a big crowd filled the district's annual meeting to protest the tax increase.
The revised budget would mean a tax rate of $9.71 per $1,000 of equalized property value, compared to $9.57 a year ago.
