State senator to meet with District 28 constituents

Hales Corners - State Senator Mary Lazich, R-New Berlin, will meet with constituents of Senate District 28 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Jan. 26 in the Hunt Room at the Hales Corners Public Library, 5885 S. 116th St.

Whitnall hosts annual talent show

Hales Corners - Whitnall High School 20th Annual Talent Show will take place Jan. 28 in the school's auditorium, 5000 S. 116th St., Greenfield.

There are 30 acts this year, all Whitnall high school students.

The show begins at 6 p.m. and it will run about three hours. The cost to attend is $8.

All-you-can-eat breakfast benefits library programs

Greendale - Friends of Greendale Library will hold a pancake, waffle, and French toast all-you-can-eat breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon Jan. 29 at Greendale American Legion Hall, 6351 W. Grange Ave.

The cost is $7 for adults and $5 for children. Proceeds to benefit youth and summer reading programs at the Greendale Public Library.

Wehr Nature Center will host Winterfest

Franklin - Wehr Nature Center, 9701 W. College Ave., will host Winterfest from noon to 3:30 p.m. Jan. 29.

Outdoors, participants can explore snow-covered trails, take a snowy woodland hike led by a professional naturalist, learn how to track animals, build a snow sculpture or create a unique winter painting.

Indoors, participants can warm up by the fireplace, meet the variety of animals that live at the center, learn if each snowflake really is unique, make a craft to take home and learn about feeding birds. Experts will provide information on various winter recreation activities, like cross-country skiing, downhill skiing and snowshoeing. Warm food will be available for purchase.

Admission to Winterfest is $2 per person and parking is $3.

Free ice-fishing clinics to be held at Scout Lake Park

Greendale - The 21st annual free ice-fishing clinics for children ages 15 and younger will take place, weather permitting, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 4 at Scout Lake Park, 5902 W. Loomis Road.

The clinics begin every hour with the last clinic starting at 2 p.m. No registration is required.

All fishing equipment will be furnished. Dress warmly. Young children must be accompanied by an adult. Members of local fishing clubs will teach knot tying, safe use of equipment and proper techniques on the ice.

Party and dance benefits female veterans

Greendale - The American Legion Family will hold its first-ever Valentine's Sweetheart Party and Benefit Dance from 7 to 11 p.m. Feb. 10 at Greendale American Legion Hall, 6351 W. Grange Ave.

The dance will feature music from the 40s, 50s and 60s. Free beer, soda, snacks and desserts will be available. Get a free photo in the old-fashioned photo booth. There will be raffles. Bring a bag of individually wrapped candy or chocolate and receive a free ticket for a door prize.

Dress from the era or wear a uniform.

Tickets are $10. All proceeds will go to female veterans.

Church to host drive for BloodCenter

Franklin - St. Martin of Tours Parish, 7963 S. 116th St., will host a blood drive from 1:30 to 6:30 p.m. Feb. 13 in the gym to benefit the BloodCenter of Southeastern Wisconsin.

Card party proceeds to benefit various charities

Oak Creek - St. Matthew Holy Name of Oak Creek, 9303 S. Chicago Road, will host its annual card party from 6 p.m. to midnight Feb. 17.

A $10 fee at the door includes beer, soda, snacks and a dinner. Also available are raffles for a lawn mower, a gas-powered trimmer, a flat-screen television, and a Packer football.

All proceeds will be donated to various charities.

Library programs continue in winter

Hales Corners - A new session of Story Times, Book Buddies and Snack Attackers begins in January at the Hales Corners Public Library, 5885 S. 116th St.

Registration is required and has already begun.

Story Times for ages 2 and 3 will be held from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Wednesdays. Story Times for ages 3 to 5 will be held from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Tuesdays. Book Buddies will be held from 4 to 4:45 p.m. on alternating Thursdays. Snack Attackers will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. on alternating Thursdays.

Children in kindergarten to grade 5 can sign up for a 20-minute session with Zoe, a dog, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Jan. 22, 29 and Feb. 5. Participants should bring a favorite book or choose one from the library to read to Zoe. Each child is encouraged to complete two 20-minute sessions with Zoe to earn a free book and certificate of accomplishment.

Parents and caregivers and their toddlers can join Toddler Playgroup from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Jan. 27, Feb. 3, 10, 17 and 24. This is not structured as a story time, but an opportunity to have fun and make friends with other parents and caregivers from the community while the toddlers play. Myers leads series of garden walks at Boerner

Hales Corners - Boerner Botanical Gardens, 9400 Boerner Drive, will host Melinda Myers and her "Discover Hidden Treasures" series.

The series, which began in January, will consist of six in-depth garden walks - four geared toward adults and two to families. Myers will share her knowledge and expertise and answer questions along the way.

Proceeds from the garden walks support Children's Plant Science and Environmental Education at Boerner Botanical Gardens.

Garden Walks (adult): $20 per class for members of the Friends of Boerner Botanical Gardens; $25 for nonmembers.

6:30 p.m. May 16: Discovering Solutions for Your Garden - Visit shady spaces, rock gardens, hot sunny spots and rain gardens for planting strategies.

6:30 p.m. July 25: Gardens of the Future - Visit one of only 43 All-American Selection Trial Gardens in the United States.

10 a.m. Oct. 20: Fall Discovery - Explore Boerner's gardens.
