Ex-Franklin businessman killed in Haiti helicopter crash

Feb. 05, 2010 4:30 p.m. | A former Wisconsin businessman and real estate developer on a humanitarian mission to Haiti was one of two Americans killed in a helicopter crash in the Dominican Republic, authorities said Friday.

James Jalovec, 53, former owner of Milwaukee-based A&J Cartage Inc., and his pilot, John Ward, 43, of Fort Myers, Fla., were killed Thursday when their helicopter crashed into a mountain in the western Dominican Republic province of Dajabon, said Dominican Civil Aviation Institute spokesman Pedro Jimenez.

A former Franklin resident, Jalovec was also part owner of Oak Creek Storage and Handling Inc.

He moved to Naples several years ago, after selling the sewerage hauling firm, and was the owner of Sweetwater Environmental, a wastewater hauling company in Sebring, Fla., the Naples Daily News' Web site said.

Jalovec also was a former owner of Trees on the Move, a New Berlin commercial and residential landscaping contractor, said the firm's current owner, Gary McHugh.

Ex-Iceport site in Cudahy draws interest

Feb. 02, 2012 7:00 a.m. | Some possible new light industrial and office uses have surfaced for portions of the former Iceport site, in Cudahy.

One prospective development would use 10 acres for a distribution center, and another would use 6 to 8 acres for a similar project, including office space, said Brian Biernat, Cudahy's economic development director.

Biernat declined to provide names of the prospective users. The city Community Development Authority's board recently met in closed session to discuss interest in the city-owned site. The state open meetings law allows governments to hold closed sessions to discuss real estate negotiations.

City officials hope to soon obtain certification from the state Department of Natural Resources regarding an environmental cleanup conducted at the site, south of E. Layton Ave. and east of S. Nicholson Ave.

The department's sign-off on the cleanup is needed before the land can be sold or leased for development.

Oak Creek boys knock down door to beat Franklin, 46-43, in OT

Jan. 31, 2012 10:09 p.m. | Ever since its successful road trip in December, the Oak Creek boys basketball team has been waiting and working for an opportunity to get a Southeast Conference win.

Close calls and disappointments followed through four frustrating games.

Until Tuesday night, when the Knights played their traditionally stout defense, hit key free throws and generally made the plays they needed to in pulling off a 46-43 overtime win over error-prone host and rival Franklin.

"We're never ever going to get any style points for the way we play," said Knight coach Mike Jossie. "We just do what we have to do. The coaches and the players understand that and now I get to go into the lockerroom and celebrate with some very happy kids."

With the win, the Knights improved to 2-7 in Southeast play and 6-9 overall while Franklin fell into a three-way tie for second in league play at 6-3 and 7-9 overall.

Jan. 16, 2012 3:20 p.m. | A 4-year-old boy wandering a busy street in Cudahy by himself early Monday was saved by a Milwaukee County bus driver, police said.

The bus driver noticed the boy walking alone in the 5400 block of S. Packard Ave. - one of the city's busiest streets - at 6:19 a.m. Monday and brought the boy onto the bus, Cudahy police Sgt. Chris Blunt said.

The boy had walked away from his grandparents' home in Cudahy and was fully clothed and uninjured, police said.

"Our cops - that's a common thing - they bought him breakfast. I think they bought him McDonald's," Blunt said. "The officers that dealt with the kid said he was a very nice kid, very clean cut. And he seemed to be very intelligent. I don't know of any distress, which is kind of rare."

The officers then took the boy home to his mom.
