Happy Birthday, Dave Clark!

As a youngster I’d enjoy getting into the family Buick with Mom and Dad on a Sunday night and head over to Uncle Claude and Auntie Rose’s house.

On more than one occasion upon arrival someone would ask where the girls were, my lovely teenage cousins Claire and Claudia. My uncle would answer they were in the bathroom and then roll his eyes.

“Oh, Claude!” reacted Auntie Rose.

I’d find the bathroom door wide open with Claire and Claudia politely fighting to get mirror time. In precise unison they worked their brushes.

“What are you doing?” I inquired.

My cousins never stopped and never turned away from the mirror.

“We’re ratting our hair.”

They were kind enough to leave out the word, “silly.”

This ritual was conducted before the Fischer family all sat down to watch Ed Sullivan, the TV host who always featured the top musical performers of the time.

When the Dave Clark Five appeared as guests, Claire and Claudia, complete with reworked hairdos let out their own shrieks at the sight and sound of the British stars.

Dave Clark, who played the drums, turned 71 today.

For a brief period, the Dave Clark Five’s popularity rivaled that of the Beatles.
