QUOTES OF THE WEEK
"It is a tragedy of the first proportion that a private corporation can be subjected to what I would characterize as a shakedown, in this case a $20 billion shakedown."
Rep. Joe Barton (R-Tex.), the ranking member of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce giving the opening statement at this week’s BP hearing. A compromise was reached with BP on an escrow fund to pay for damages from its broken oil well in the
Former Texas Congressman Dick Armey discussing the $20 billion escrow fund.
"I was personally devastated. Based on the events of April 20 and thereafter, we need to be better prepared for a subsea disaster. It is clear that our industry needs to significantly improve our ability to quickly address deep-sea accidents of this type and magnitude. Based on what happened on April 20, we now know we need better safety technology. We in the industry have long relied on the blowout preventer as the principal piece of safety equipment. Yet, on this occasion it apparently failed, with disastrous consequences. We must use this incident as a case study to avoid a similar failure in the future."
BP President Tony Hayward in a draft of his testimony before the House Energy and Commerce subcommittee on oversight and investigations.
Obama has "a default mechanism that breaks down on the side of the minority."
Iowa Republican Congressman Steve King said he didn't misspeak when he told a nationally syndicated radio show on Monday that President Obama favors blacks over whites. King told the G. Gordon Liddy show that Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder repeatedly demonstrate an unjust preference toward minorities. But King stopped short of calling the president a racist. “I don't know if I want to go so far as to make that allegation," he said.
Democrats took over the state Legislature in the 2008 elections and then had to deal with "Barack Obama's economic disaster."
Wisconsin Democratic Party Chairman Mike Tate slipping up in his remarks at his party's annual convention.
“You have to lift their skirts to find out if they are women. You sure can’t find out by how they vote!” Tennessee Rep. Janis Baird Sontany (D), referring to female Republican state legislators.
“The only sources making this into some kind of travesty are those of the tree hugging, Birkenstock wearing, hairy armpit, soap is kryptonite persuasion. We on the right fully embrace women who aren't afraid to look good. We realize that people are a package deal, and yes, looks are part of it. We don't castigate women who choose to look like, well, women, If Sarah Palin chose to have breast augmentation surgery (which I don't believe she did, just knowing the down time on such a procedure) then we applaud her for making a choice that obviously propped up her self esteem. Non issue.”

"What I am opposed to is the continued negative and nasty tone that the Neumann campaign is taking toward Scott Walker. That doesn't help anyone but Democrats. The time for Mark Neumann to have contrasts with Scott Walker was months and month ago, not 140 days before the general election.”
Former Tommy Thompson associate, political strategist Bill McCoshen, blasting GOP gubernatorial candidate Mark Neumann.
"They're saying we should stop attacking, but the bottom line is all we're doing is bringing out his (

“Another child dies as a result of co-sleeping, reporters write stories, politicians bemoan the situation and public service announcements air. Yet nothing changes. Changing behavior requires going back to the old carrot-and-stick adage. Right now, only carrots are in place to induce parents to do the right thing, including free cribs and educational programs. The only stick is the death of the child, and, sadly, that consequence does not seem to be enough of a threat to many parents. Maybe prison combined with grief will get the message across.”
Deanna Ding,
“I know that between Brett Favre, and the NFL period, of course there’s going to be a double standard. That guy came out of retirement and he played extremely well. He played extraordinary. The rules can stretch for him, should I say? The thing is, I don’t see anybody having a problem with that. No. 1, his age. No. 2, how long he’s been in the league. And then No. 3, how well he’s been playing since he’s been in the league. It’s been consistent and constant. It hasn’t been sporadic. To have him back, it will help the team. We wouldn’t want to – well, I wouldn’t want to – ruffle any feathers with him.”
