MJS sucks up to pro-illegal immigrant group

Today’s Milwaukee Journal Sentinel includes a large portion of an address the paper's editor, Marty Kaiser gave to the American Society of News Editors in Washington on April 12. Kaiser told the organization’s annual convention:

“The best journalists are always asking . . .

What am I missing?”

Apparently Kaiser's words of wisdom were lost on Journal Sentinel reporter Georgia Pabst who writes a glowing (and nauseating) front page piece about Voces de la Frontera, a local organization supportive of illegal immigrants, and its leader, Christine Neumann-Ortiz. Pabst writes:

“While Neumann-Ortiz has become a national leader on immigration reform, it's also made her controversial and the target of fierce opposition.

Former Republican state Sen. Cathy Stepp once called Neumann-Ortiz a terrorist and tried to get her prosecuted when she and three others went to Stepp's Racine County home in 2006 to try to talk to her about her vote on a driver's license bill that would have required proof of U.S. citizenship. The Racine County district attorney refused to prosecute Neumann-Ortiz."

The insinuation is quite clear, that poor ol' Neumann-Ortiz was the target of fierce opposition from former state Senator Cathy Stepp when all Neumann-Ortiz wanted to do was have a friendly chat with the legislator.

“The best journalists are always asking . . .

What am I missing?”

Here’s what Pabst and her editor missed in their desire to carry water for Voces de la Frontera. From the website Real Debate Wisconsin, an excerpt from a statement issued by then-Senator Stepp:

“Leaders of a Hispanic activist group known as Voces de la Frontera believe that in America, it is better to storm the home of an elected official and yell in their windows after dark to intimidate someone rather than to run for office to change policy. On the evening of Friday, December 16th, a group of people advocating the issuing of drivers’ licenses to non-citizens appeared outside my windows yelling and attempting to intimidate me to vote against Assembly Bill 69. Law enforcement was notified and the group disbanded. This group justifies their actions by claiming they have not had their phone call returned when in reality all constituent calls are returned until callers become belligerent or profane.

Opponents of the bill, like the leadership of Voces de la Frontera, threaten that if they don’t get their way illegal aliens will respond by driving without a license anyway. If the legislature responds to threats like this, should we then issue pilots’ licenses to illegal aliens who threaten that they’ll fly a plane without one?

Driver’s licenses are privileges for people who obey the law. Anyone here illegally is, by definition, not obeying the law.”

Oh, yeh. There’s that pesky little detail about it being illegal to be an illegal immigrant. Trivial information like the above gets lost, or to use Marty Kaiser’s word, “missing” when a big fat wet kiss advocacy piece is being written.

Two Pulitzers in the past three years, but what are those circulation numbers again?
