THE WEEKEND DOG-WALKING FORECAST: We grade the weather outlook for taking your pet outdoors.

TODAY:  Sunny. High of 56.  "C"

SUNDAY:  Sunny.  High of 54  "C"

Here’s my lovely wife, Jennifer with this week’s main blog:

On any of the first nice days in Wisconsin, you can see them anywhere:  young kids in shorts who obviously begged mom enough to be able to wear them, even though it’s ten degrees still too cold; twenty-somethings in that horrific “style” of boxers sticking out of three-sizes-too-big shorts; young women with “muffin tops” and pasty skin who prompt Kevin to say that winter has not been kind to most Wisconsin women.  This happens literally every year.

In our neighborhood, where there are at least a dozen dogs we see walking regularly, we can also notice a difference on those furry, four-legged bodies.  Those pooches get nice, long, leisurely walks during the pleasant seasons.  But when the wind chill is sub-Arctic those walks turn in to quick runs to “do the duty” and head back home to a nice warm sanctuary.  Yes, winter can take its toll on EVERY body.

Have you thought about why Poochy might be packing on the pounds?  Have you noticed a not-so-svelte figure on Fido?  Ernest Ward, D.V.M., is a practicing veterinarian, author, speaker and athlete who is dedicated to helping pets and their humans live healthier lives.  His recent web chat hopes to shed some light on shedding pounds.

Are you looking to increase your fitness level along with Rocky?  Anyone who has time to walk the dog has time to work on fitness, according to Tricia Murphy Madden.

As I’ve mentioned more than once in The Barking Lot, our wonderful neighbor feeds his dog Mickey only high-quality, vet-approved “people food” and nothing that is manufactured for dogs.  This blog shares some food for thought as well as canine-friendly recipes that you might find useful in helping your dog slim down.

Finally, if you’re confused about all the information that’s out there, some dog nutrition myths are debunked here.

So feel free to step out this Summer, with Max taking the lead, both of you happy & healthy and loving the VERY short season in Wisconsin.
