QUOTES OF THE WEEK

"The question I'm going to ask myself and I ask of all of you, is there enough serious effort that in a month's time or a few week's time or six weeks' time, we could actually resolve something. And if we can't, we've got to go ahead and make some decisions."
President Obama at the health care summit.

"Both of us ... promised 'change in Washington.'... Eight times you (Obama) said negotiations on healthcare reform would be conducted before C-Span cameras. I'm glad, more than a year later, that they are here. Unfortunately, this (Democratic) product was not produced in that fashion. It was produced behind doors."
Senator John McCain (R-Arizona) at the summit.

“Let me just make this point, John, because we’re not campaigning anymore. The election is over.”
President Obama at the summit.

“I’m reminded of that every day.”
McCain at the summit.

“There are [consumer protections] in every state…. Do we distrust our governors? Do we distrust our state legislatures? Should people in Washington decide exactly how this works and what [insurance] you can and cannot buy?”
Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) at the summit.

"This is a car that can't be recalled and fixed and ... we ought to start over."
Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn) at the summit.

"I even have one constituent -- you will not believe this, and I know you won't, but it's true -- her sister died. This poor woman had no dentures. She wore her dead sister's teeth, which of course were uncomfortable and did not fit."
Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-NY) at the summit.

"The government now directs over 60 percent of the healthcare in this country. And if throwing money at it and creating new government programs could solve it, we wouldn't be sitting here today because we've done all that. It hasn't worked."
Senator Tom Coburn (R-Oklahoma) at the summit.

"We can't afford this. That is the ultimate problem here."
House Republican Whip Eric Cantor (VA) at the summit.

"I don't think it made a nickel's worth of difference. It's fair to say the trend is going against the bill.”
Congressman Gene Taylor (D-Miss) said he chatted at the House gym Friday morning with fellow conservative Democrats and found that Obama's health care summit had produced no new momentum.

"People who voted 'yes' would love a second bite at the apple to vote 'no' this time, because they went home and got an unpleasant experience. On the other hand, I don't know anybody who voted 'no' who regrets it."
Congressman Jason Altmire (D- Pennsylvania) on the issue of health care.

"It's easy being vice president — you don't have to do anything."
VP Joe Biden at this week’s health care summit.

"I met with some people while I was home dealing with domestic abuse. It has gotten out of hand. Why? Men don't have jobs. Women don't have jobs either, but women aren’t abusive, most of the time. Men, when they're out of work, tend to become abusive.”
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) suggested Monday that domestic violence by men has increased due to U.S. joblessness.

"Well, you know, to me I find it interesting that you have a lot of the Republicans running around and pushing back on the stimulus money and saying this doesn't create any new jobs, and then they go out and they do the photo ops and they are posing with the big check and they say, isn't this great? Look what the kind of -- the kind of money I provide here for the state, and this is great money to create jobs, and this has created 10,000 new jobs and this has created 20,000 new jobs. And all of these kind of things. It doesn't match up."
Republican California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger speaking to host Terry Moran on ABCs "This Week" program.

Wisconsin deserves a shot of adrenaline, a bright shining star to return to active duty.”
Former state Senator Dave Zien (R--Eau Claire) in a letter to the editor encouraging Wisconsinites to draft Tommy Thompson to run for U.S. Senate.

I try to stay out of it. Does it bother me when people ask questions? No. I can’t tell them things I don’t know. I always encourage people to do things but with Tom, it’s always no. I always discourage it; you can’t go back, you need to look ahead. My philosophy is quit while you’re ahead.”
Sue Ann Thompson, wife of former Gov. Tommy Thompson, on rumors that her husband may take on Russ Feingold.

“This is ObamaCare, that's what this is. ... This is an absolute vote in favor of government-run health care.”
Senate Minority Leader Scott Fitzgerald (R-Juneau) during floor debate on BadgerCare Plus Basic.

I'll get government out of your way and lower the tax burden so Wisconsin business owners and factories can create 250,000 new jobs and 10,000 new businesses by 2015.”
Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker promising to lower the tax and regulation burden on businesses as governor.

You don't get to make up numbers out of thin air just because you want to be governor.”
State Democratic Party Chairman Mike Tate attacking Walker's job creation goals.

“If Scott Walker had a plan to bring jobs to Wisconsin he should have implemented it in Milwaukee sometime during the last eight years.”
Mark Neumann, Walker's GOP rival.

"If Mark wins the primary, I'll support him 100 percent.”
Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker, referring to gubernatorial primary opponent Mark Neumann at the Wisconsin Realtors Association's government day in Madison.

"Ditto.”
Mark Neumann, responding at the Wisconsin Realtors event in Madison.

Getting into prison is not easy. You've got to get locked up and convicted a lot of times before we get you prison space. We're looking at a class of offenders that have already demonstrated a history of re-offending, and that's not likely to change anytime soon.”
Milwaukee Police Chief Ed Flynn on reports that two of the prisoners freed under the state's new earned early release program were picked up for violating terms of their release. Both were expected to be re-released this week.

Hannah Storm in a horrifying, horrifying outfit today. She’s got on red go-go boots and a catholic school plaid skirt … way too short for somebody in her 40s or maybe early 50s by now. She’s got on her typically very, very tight shirt. She looks like she has sausage casing wrapping around her upper body … I know she’s very good, and I’m not supposed to be critical of ESPN people, so I won’t … but Hannah Storm … come on now! Stop! What are you doing?"
ESPN’s Tony Kornheiser describing live on-air the wardrobe of ESPN colleague Hannah Storm. Kornheiser was suspended by the network for his remarks.
