Assembly and State Senate Races Crucial to Right-to-Life Efforts

The 2010 elections for state legislative seats are extremely crucial and will determine whether or not right-to-life initiatives will pass in either house.

With a number of open seats due to retirements and the fact that some pro-abortion legislators appear to be vulnerable, there are many opportunities to make significant right-to-life gains.

One State Senate race is already shaping up to be one of the most important in the state.  Right-to-life Assembly Representative Leah Vukmir (R-Wauwatosa) is challenging State Senate first-termer, Jim Sullivan (D-Wauwatosa).

Vukmir was first elected to the Assembly in 2002 and has maintained a stellar 100% right-to-life voting record.  She has been a leader on a number of right-to-life initiatives and has often led the fight against legislation that would demean the sanctity of human life.

Sullivan was elected to the State Senate in 2006 and had an abysmal 0% right-to-life voting record in the 2007-2008 legislative session.  In the current legislation session, Sullivan is well on his way to matching his previous voting pattern on right-to-life issues.

Here are some "highlights" from Sullivan's right-to-life voting record:
  • voted to include a publicly financed health care plan in the 2007-2008 state budget bill.  The health care plan Sullivan voted for included abortion coverage paid for with public dollars.
  • voted against allowing the state Senate to vote on the Coercive Abortion Prevention Act (AB 427).  This legislation would have protected women who are being coerced into having an abortion.  AB 427 had passed the Assembly but the refusal of Jim Sullivan and others to allow action on the legislation in the State Senate killed the measure.
  • Voted to confirm the appointments of Roger Axtell and Michael Weiner to the UW Hospital and Clinics Authority Board.  Wisconsin Right to Life strongly opposed the confirmations of Axtell and Weiner because they had voted to approve a late-term abortion facility at the Madison Surgery Center.
  • Voted in favor of AB 458, legislation that prohibits all Wisconsin public schools from providing an abstinence-only approach within a human growth and development curriculum.
It is clear that Vukmir and Sullivan are worlds apart when it comes to voting on right-to-life issues.

In the months to come, we will be providing complete candidate information on this race, other state races, congressional races and the gubernatorial race.

Nebraska Bill Would Prohibit All Late-Term Abortions

A bill (LB 104) has been introduced in Nebraska which would prohibit the performance of abortions after the child has the "physical structures necessary to experience pain." The bill would require that an abortionist determine the gestational age of the unborn child before performing an abortion. It is well established scientifically that by 20 weeks gestation, the unborn child experiences substantial pain. The impact of this bill, if passed and upheld, is that abortions after about 20 weeks or later would no longer be legal if a state passes a law prohibiting such abortions.

LB 104, of course, flies in the face of the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision and presents a new challenge to the holdings in Roe which allows abortions to be performed throughout the full nine months of pregnancy.

Nebraska is a good state in which to set up such a challenge since notorious abortionist LeRoy Carhart publicly claims that he does abortions at 24 weeks gestation. Carhart has also assumed the mantle of the late George Tiller as the person to whom women can turn late in pregnancy for an abortion.

A bill and a state to watch as the first of its kind in the nation.

Rally for Life This Saturday, February 6 - Madison

Wisconsin Right to Life is a sponsor of the Second Annual Rally/March for Life that will take place at noon on Saturday, February 6 in Madison.  The location will be the 700-800 block of State Street followed by a march to the Madison Surgery Center.

You will remember that it was one year ago in February that the Madison Surgery Center announced plans to perform late-term abortions at their facility.  Since that time, tens of thousands of people and many Madison Surgery Center staff members have expressed their outrage at the proposal.  Thus far, no late term abortions have been performed at the facility.

The keynote speaker at the rally will be the dynamic Chris Slattery of Expectant Mother Care Frontline Pregnancy Centers in New York City. Plan to join right-to-life people from throughout Wisconsin at the Rally/March for Life on Saturday, February 6.  See you on State Street at noon!
