Here’s my lovely wife, Jennifer with this week’s main blog:
Last month, I blogged about a friend of mine and her boyfriend who were at odds with their pets and how they affected their relationship. It seems this is a fairly common situation and I must admit it amazes me. I truly don’t understand how loving your pet can come between loving your human soul mate.
I remember an acquaintance in high school who was having trouble with her boyfriend. Who doesn’t at that age? Believe it or not, they actually went to COUNSELING!!!! I vividly recall thinking to myself (wisely, in retrospect) that dating in high school should be fun and casual and nice. I vowed to myself right then and there, that if I ever found myself in a relationship that “needed counseling” I would be O-U-T. (It had nothing to do with a pet, but my GOD, what 16-year-old kids need dating counseling???!!!!)
My beliefs haven’t changed that much as an adult. I’m not saying I’d give up on a relationship. I’m not saying relationships don’t take work, to some extent. But why must things be so complicated? Why must every other person I know need this guy?
And why must PETS enter in to the “it’s all about me” equation? Yeah, I want a dog. Yeah, I want more than one. But it is a DOG, for crying out loud! I have made sacrifices for the pets in my youth, and I know I will do the same when we become dog owners in this family. But the day I would put Fido before Kevin and Kyla, well, just have my head examined.
Perhaps I should have chosen a different major in college. Seems I could have made a pretty penny delving into the minds of people like Joe and Ellen Lollman.
