This week, we salute the All-American dog.

Earlier this year, on the occasion of its 125th anniversary, the American Kennel Club announced the ten most popular dogs in the United States. They are:

10. Shih Tzu

AKC Top 10 Breeds
This little dog's sole purpose is to be a companion and house pet. The breed, especially prized during the Chinese Ming dynasty, is friendly and requires minimal exercise, but needs regular grooming. (American Kennel Club)

9. Poodle

AKC Top 10 Breeds
Though the breed has gotten a reputation for being unintelligent, they are smart and excel in obedience training. The traditional "Poodle clip" style of grooming was used by to help the dogs move through the water while protecting their joints and vital organs.
(American Kennel Club)

8. Bulldog

AKC Top 10 Breeds
Known for its shuffling gait and large head, the bulldog weighs between 40 and 50 pounds. First recognized by the AKC in 1886, bulldogs tend to be gentle and protective and often form strong bonds with children. (American Kennel Club)

7. Dachshund

AKC Top 10 Breeds
First bred in the 1600s, this breed comes in three coat varieties -- smooth, wirehaired and longhaired. They were created to fight to the death with badgers, but now are known as playful companions that may require supervision with children. (American Kennel Club)

6. Boxer

AKC Top 10 Breeds

Instinctive guardians, this breed was originally developed in Germany for use in dog fighting and for holding down large game for hunters. The breed is known for its desire for human attention, especially from children. (American Kennel Club)

5. Beagle

AKC Top 10 Breeds

In the AKC's Top 10 list every year, this breed comes in two sizes, 13-inch and 15-inch, and is known for its bray rather than its bark. Beagles can be mischievous, but make great family pets. They have been beloved for years, as demonstrated by the enduring popularity of Snoopy, Charlie Brown's best friend in the Peanuts comic strip. (American Kennel Club)

4. Golden Retriever

AKC Top 10 Breeds
Known for its intelligence and friendly temperament, this breed originated in the Scottish Highlands and were used primarily for hunting. Their water-repellant coat sheds seasonally and requires regular brushing. (American Kennel Club)

3. German Shepherd

AKC Top 10 Breeds

This breed was created by mixing herding and farm dogs. Popularized in part by a string of movies such as "Rin Tin Tin," German shepherds are loyal and outgoing. They make good guard dogs and family pets.(American Kennel Club)

2. Yorkshire Terrier

AKC Top 10 Breeds
Affectionately known as "Yorkies," these dogs are true terriers, brave and determined. Their small size makes them ideal city dwellers, though their long coats require regular brushing. (American Kennel Club)

And finally,

#1.

The Labrador Retriever

AKC Top 10 Breeds

Originally from Newfoundland, this outgoing and energetic breed is known for its pleasant temperament. They come in three colors: chocolate, black and yellow. (American Kennel Club)

Here are more details from the AKC.

Time now for DOGS IN THE NEWS, canines that made headlines the past week.

Most honest, decent people, when they find a lost dog, try to hook it up with its owner(s). This guy found the owner, but wanted something in exchange.

Losing a dog is hard. A memorial service can help.

Thank goodness everyone got out safely when a Milwaukee house caught on fire. Yes, there's a dog angle.

A new flu vaccine for dogs has been approved. Here are more details about the H3N8 dog flu.

It's not easy being a taxicab driver when your fare is a pooch.

Pabst was a recent winner and it's hard to argue.

And we haven't had one of these for awhile...a naughty dog story.

That's it for this week. Thanks for stopping by.
