Kevin Fischer is a veteran broadcaster, the recipient of over 150 major journalism awards from the Milwaukee Press Club, the Wisconsin Associated Press, the Northwest Broadcast News Association, the Wisconsin Bar Association, and others. He has been seen and heard on Milwaukee TV and radio stations for over three decades. A longtime aide to state Senate Republicans in the Wisconsin Legislature, Kevin can be seen offering his views on the news on the public affairs program, "InterCHANGE," on Milwaukee Public Television Channel 10, and heard filling in on Newstalk 1130 WISN. He lives with his wife, Jennifer, and their lovely baby daughter, Kyla Audrey, in Franklin.
The WIAA unkind to Franklin
Franklin High School’s football team managed a winning record at 5-4, good enough to get into the state playoffs. After their win against Muskego Wednesday night, Franklin knew its season wasn’t over. Now the wait was on to see who and where they’d play.
It’s now official. The Sabers will play Oregon……at Oregon. Thanks, thanks a lot, WIAA.
I’ve been involved in local high school sports in some form or fashion since the mid-60’s. Those of us close to high school athletics know very well that the WIAA, the governing body of high school sports in Wisconsin, has a negative bias toward the southeastern corner of the state. That bias showed again in the WIAA’s decision to send Franklin on the road.
Someone has to play on the road in the first round games, granted. But historically, first-round games pit teams within close, reasonable proximity to one another.
Franklin is 5-4. So is Whitnall. Waterford, a Franklin opponent in the playoffs last year is 7-2. The WIAA could have easily slotted Franklin against either one of those schools. But who knows what the WIAA brass, using whatever seeding process they’ve come up, was thinking when they decided to send Franklin to Oregon. Oregon High is 95 miles away from Franklin High.If the Sabers win Tuesday night, what’s next? A trip to Bayfield?
If Franklin does get a victory next week, they had better play their second round game at home.
