Catholics for Obama are morally confused
Catholics voting for Barack Obama. I admit I honestly can’t understand that scenario. In a recent blog, I wrote:
“The New York Times writes that this year’s election is causing problems for Catholics, especially on the issue of abortion. You bet it is. The most liberal member of the United States, a politician with no regard for unborn children, an abortionist’s best friend could become the next President. And yet, too many Catholics are poised to vote for the extremely dangerous Barack Obama.
This is insane. How can anyone call himself a Catholic, knowing full well the teachings and doctrines of the Catholic faith, and then go out and vote for the baby-killer Barack? It makes no sense.”
The Voter’s Guide for Serious Catholics prepared by Catholic Answers Action spells it out clearly:
“Some things are always wrong, and no one may deliberately vote in favor of them. Legislators, who have a direct vote, may not support these evils in legislation or programs. Citizens support these evils indirectly if they vote in favor of candidates who propose to advance them. Thus, to the greatest extent possible, Catholics must avoid voting for any candidate who intends to support programs or laws that are intrinsically evil.
The Church teaches that, regarding a law permitting abortions, it is ‘never licit to obey it, or to take part in a propaganda campaign in favor of such a law, or to vote for it’ (EV 73).”
Over on the other site that I blog at, The Right View Wisconsin, contributor Scott J. is also taken aback:
“How are my fellow Catholics confused by this? How can you choose your political party over your Faith?
Scott adds:
“According to Archbishop (Charles) Chaput, there is irony to be found in all of the arguments being made by Catholics in favor of Sen. Barack Obama—none of them are new. ‘They've been around, in one form or another, for more than 25 years.
All of them seek to get beyond abortion, or economically reduce the number of abortions, or create a better society where abortion won't be necessary. All of them involve a misuse of the seamless garment imagery in Catholic social teaching. And all of them, in practice, seek to contextualize, demote and then counterbalance the evil of abortion with other important but less foundational social issues.’
The archbishop also offered his analysis of Catholics who argue that ‘Senator Obama is this year's real prolife candidate.’ For Catholics to believe this ‘requires a peculiar kind of self-hypnosis, or moral confusion, or worse,’ he stated.”

I repeat: Any Catholic who votes for Barack Obama is no Catholic and should not only be deeply ashamed, but should never possess the courage to walk into a Catholic church ever again.
