Sign controversy on Milwaukee's south side

On the city of Milwaukee’s near south side, the Milwaukee Journal/Sentinel is reporting today:

“Billboards that showed a popular south side priest endorsing Milwaukee Ald. James Witkowiak for re-election have been replaced.

Father Eleazar Perez, a Spanish-speaking Mexican priest at St. Adalbert Catholic Church, complained when billboards went up last week that showed him apparently endorsing Witkowiak, who is running for re-election against former Ald. Angel Sanchez.

The billboards now show Witkowiak being endorsed by a group of other south side pastors, including street minister Marty Calderon.”

By the way, Witkowiak insists Perez gave his campaign permission to use his picture as an endorsement.

Well, since that’s been settled, will Witkowiak’s opponent, Angel Sanchez take down his inaccurate and misleading signs?

Please follow the bouncing alderman.

In 2000, Sanchez defeated Alderman Witkowiak to take his seat on the Milwaukee Common Council.

In 2004, Witkowiak beat Sanchez to win back his seat.

Sanchez is running against Witkowiak again, and is using his old 2004 yard signs that say, “Re-elect Alderman Sanchez.”

They’re incorrect, plain and simple and need to come down (or certain inaccurate parts of the sign need to be blacked out or covered up). Will someone in the predominantly Hispanic 12th Aldermanic District in Milwaukee make that request of Sanchez?

Will the Journal/Sentinel?
