QUOTES OF THE WEEK

“With anger over the border crisis at a boiling point, the White House today asked Congress for $3.7 billion to deal with flood of unaccompanied children coming into the United States illegally. Nearly half of the money would go to care for the children while they await deportation hearings, most of the rest for beefing up border security and hiring new judges and lawyers to process the cases. It’s going to be a tough sell. Republicans today accused the president of asking for a blank check. Overall, more than 52,000 children have crossed the border alone illegally since October. The White House has refused to say how many of them have been deported.”
ABC News Correspondent Jonathan Karl

“Let's keep in mind with all due respect to the administration they are one step behind. They should have seen this coming a long time ago. They should have seen this a long time ago because we saw those numbers increasing. We are hoping we can get that money so we can provide more detention spaces, more flights down there, and again, if we put those young children and those mothers in the right caregivers in those countries I think this would solve. There is an incentive, there is an incentive that if you bring a child over here or your child by themselves, you're going to be let go. And that is exactly what is happening. Our immigration courts are so backlogged, there is not enough detention spaces and therefore this is the incentive that we have to take away and that is the 2008 human trafficking law that needs to be changed at this time.
Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX)

"Well, I hope this doesn't become President Obama's Katrina moment. I'm sure that President Bush thought the same thing, that he could just look at everything from up in the sky, and then he owned it after -- for a long time. So, I hope this doesn't become the Katrina moment for President Obama, saying that he doesn't need to come to border. He should come down. Not only Governor Perry has asked him to come down, but I know my colleagues (Democratic Reps.) Filemon Vela and Ruben Hinojosa invited him to come down. And I certainly would ask him to come in, even though I still think he is still one step behind. But he should come down to the border to see exactly what is happening."
Rep. Henry Cuellar, a Texas Democrat

"It doesn't make sense to compare this to a natural disaster. This is a humanitarian situation that we have been on top of from the very beginning. The president's instructions to his team and his own efforts have been to stay focused on what's going to be most impactful on dealing with the urgent humanitarian situation. Look there's people trying to turn this situation into a political football. I understand that, I work in Washington. The president's going to stay focused on what works here."
Cecilia Muñoz, director of Obama's Domestic Policy Council, a top Obama aide said there's no comparing Obama's decision to bypass the Texas border with President Bush's decision to view hurricane-devastated New Orleans from the air -- a move for which Bush was heavily criticized.

“Let’s say you build a fence, just hypothetically, and you saw five hundred children standing at the fence, and you saw them standing there 24 hours, 48 hours, 72 hours, 96 hours. There’s a fence there and they can’t go anywhere and they stay there. What do you do? The issue is, most of these children, as I understand, are not sneaking across the border. Most of these children are wanting to be taken into custody. And yes you could build a fence so they could just stand at the fence, and they’re…one was a four-year-old child. But whether the building of the fence itself is the answer…we have fences along the border. Not every place, but most places. And people still come over, under and around the fences. America is a very attractive place to come and it causes us a problem. But we all agree the border must be secured. We cannot have people coming into the United States who are not authorized to do so.”
House Democratic Whip Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) when asked, “Should Congress revisit building a physical, double-layered fence as was included in the 2006 Secure Fence Act?” The 2006 Secure Fence Act, passed with bipartisan support and signed into law by President George W. Bush, states that “the Secretary of Homeland Security shall provide for at least 2 layers of reinforced fencing, the installation of additional physical barriers, roads, lighting, cameras and sensors” across roughly 700 miles of the U.S.-Mexico border – including one section “extending 15 miles northwest of the Laredo, Texas port of entry to the Brownsville, Texas, port of entry.”

"Look, for $8 million, we can put them all on a first-class seat back to their homes. That's $8 million. That's a first-class seat, one way, to each of their homes. That's $60,000 per child that we're going to spend, in emergency money. Can we -- first of all, that shows just how incompetent we -- we can't do that for $3(000) or $4,000 per child? That's No. 1. No. 2 is, if we can't do that, the Border Patrol is as bad as the V.A.  And by the way, the vast majority of Border Patrol are not patrolling the border right now. They're involved in the humanitarian crisis. Once they move out of the detention center and they go to family or other friends or other relatives or whoever, less than 3 percent will show up for their hearing. So they're in the country. They won't be deported. And that's what has people riled."
On the same day President Obama asked Congress for $3.7 billion dollars to deal with the crisis at the Southwest border, Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) called it "the wrong approach."

“President Obama created this disaster at our southern border, and now he is asking to use billions of taxpayer dollars without accountability or a plan in place to actually stop the border crisis. Most of the money requested in the president’s supplemental seems geared toward processing Central Americans than stopping the surge itself.”
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte

"President Obama,

"I am writing this letter to you regarding illegal immigrants.

"As a tax paying, law abiding citizen of the United States, I WANT my voice heard on this issue. My son, Sergeant Brandon Mendoza, an officer who was with the City of Mesa, Arizona police department, was killed in a tragic head on collision on May 12, 2014 by a wrong way driver on our freeways. This man happened to be an illegal immigrant, was in this country illegally, convicted of previous crimes, no Social Security number, no valid driver's license BUT he had purchased a vehicle and registered it to drive in Maricopa County Arizona.

"I had my son's life STOLEN from me by a man who didn't value his life, was 3X the legal limit drunk, was high on Meth, drove for over 35 miles THE WRONG WAY on 4 different freeways and had NO BUSINESS BEING IN THIS COUNTRY!!!

"The Federal Government knew he, Raul Silva Corona , was an illegal immigrant when he was convicted on crimes in 1994 in Colorado. The prosecutors were "lenient" on him and several charges were dismissed. When he was convicted of these crimes and 1994 and the government knew he was in the country illegally, why wasn't he deported? Why are any of these illegal criminals in this country ??

"I am furious that the Federal Government allowed this criminal to stay in this country and KILL my son! I have attached several articles for you to PERSONALLY read about my son. He was an Icon with the City of Mesa Police Department. He was instrumental in making life better for people of all walks of life in the park project he took on. He was humble, selfless, worked many hours off the clock helping disadvantaged children and often used his own money to do things for the community, including "adopting" children at Christmas to provide them with gifts….out of his own money!!

"I have attached numerous articles for you to read about my son. This was not a life that should have been taken so early. The good he was doing in our community is remarkable, the difference he made in people's lives is amazing and the comfort he brought people in friendship was unmeasurable.

"All you have to do is Google " Sgt/Officer Brandon Mendoza" and you will have plenty of reading material about my wonderful son who had just passed his Sergeant's exam to become a Sgt. The Chief of Police posthumously promoted him during the week of his funeral but that highlight of his life was stolen from him!!! He was officer of the year last year. Officer of the quarter for the first quarter of 2014. He was only 32 years old and had done more in his life than most of us have done in a lifetime!

"I am going to have my voice heard and I want to you to know what my personal feeling is on whether CRIMINAL ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS should be allowed in this country. I have been DIRECTLY affected by this. I am sure if your life had been affected like mine has been, you would have a different view of this situation. I have lived in Arizona most of my life. My son, Brandon Mendoza, was half Hispanic. It's not the color of skin that my son or I see, it's the person and how they conduct their lives. If you can't enter this country legally then you shouldn't be here. If you commit crimes, you should pay the time any of us as US Citizens would have to serve. Letting these illegal criminals out of our jails before their time is served and turning them loose on the streets to commit further crimes and KILL our loved ones is NOT ACCEPTABLE TO ME!! AND it shouldn't be acceptable to any US Citizen. Mr. President, you don't have the right to make this decision yourself......I have a say, even if it is for one moment. Maybe that one moment will light a spark with another citizen who can then light a candle, who can then light a bonfire, who can then light a city up and so on. My light has just been lit and I am not going to back down when so many of these illegal immigrants have more rights than we do. My son's death will not be ignored as another statistic.

"I want laws to change that would not allow illegal immigrants to purchase vehicles in our country and register them to drive them in our states WITHOUT having driver's licenses to drive them legally. How is this happening??? I want laws changed that will force the removal of illegal immigrants who break our laws. This man, this repeated law breaker, was allowed to be released and he continued breaking the laws in our country until what???? UNTIL HE WAS STOPPED BY MY SON IN A HEAD ON COLLISION THAT NEVER SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED!!!! HE KILLED AN OFFICER OF THE LAW AS HIS LAST ACT!!! When are you going to see the flip side to this issue? When will you realize the hurt and pain and destruction these illegal immigrants who break the law will continue to cause???? Until you live in a state that deals with this on a daily basis, you will not understand it.

"I want answers that make sense. I want answers from you personally as to why this criminal was allowed to stay in our country until he took my son's life.

"Sincerely,

"Mary Ann Mendoza"
The mother of a fallen Mesa, Arizona police sergeant wrote President Barack Obama in hopes of changing immigration laws in the U.S. Police said Mary Ann Mendoza's son, Sgt. Brandon Mendoza, was hit head-on by a driver who had been living in the country illegally for two decades.

“Every member of Congress swore an oath to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. So did President Barack Obama. But too often over the past five years, the President has circumvented the American people and their elected representatives through executive action, changing and creating his own laws, and excusing himself from enforcing statutes he is sworn to uphold -- at times even boasting about his willingness to do it, as if daring the American people to stop him. That's why, later this month, we will bring legislation to the House floor that would authorize the House of Representatives to file suit in an effort to compel President Obama to follow his oath of office and faithfully execute the laws of our country.”
House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH)

“Rob Stein, the economist, pointed this out in National Review Online. These six months, which Obama heralds as the largest, the fastest growth in jobs in the U.S. since '99, have coincided with the six months of which we have no longer extended emergency unemployment, long-term unemployment insurance.

“Remember at the end of last year, the furious debate the Democrats, the president saying, ‘If you end this, the sky is going to fall, people won't go starving, it's going to increase unemployment’? It's had precisely the opposite effect.

“In these six months, where you ended extended unemployment, and the conservative argument was if you subsidize something, you'll get more of it, if you stop the subsidy, you'll lessen it. So these six months coincide with a decrease in the median length of unemployment from 17 weeks to 13 weeks — the largest six-month decline in the length of unemployment ever measured. Which means the real problem of long-term unemployment was a function of this anomaly, emergency extended unemployment, which should never have happened, and whose end has created this -- has contributed to -- this excellent result. The debate on that extension is over and the conservatives were right.”
Charles Krauthammer

“Before God and his people I express my sorrow for the sins and grave crimes of clerical sexual abuse committed against you. And I humbly ask forgiveness. I beg your forgiveness, too for the sins of omissions on the part of Church leaders who did not respond adequately to reports of abuse made by family members, as well as by abuse victims themselves.”
Pope Francis met over the weekend with six victims of abuse by Catholic clergy, denounced attacks on children in religious terms during a special Mass this morning and warned bishops of the Roman Catholic Church that they will be held accountable for their actions toward the abused and the abusers. Some victims’ advocates dismissed the meetings and the Mass as a publicity stunt, but it seemed to me to be more than that. Francis said abusers “profane the very image of God” and talked about the way that sexual assaults by people who are in a position of profound trust can harm victims for the rest of their lives.

“Pretty soon every other name will be so offensive that you will not be able to retreat from the safety of your home until you have the politically correct version of mascot names for leisure activities. I would still like to see one documented case of where the name of a sports team turned someone into a racist. Soldiers are dying in Afghanistan, children starve, and people are desperately seeking answers to their existence while leftist leadership prioritizes team names. Something does not add up with their priorities.”
