I am writing you today because you are a person of good taste. You appreciate super premium spirits like those we produce here at Great Lakes Distillery. Quite possibly you have tasted them before you ever bought them either at a tasting in a bar or at the distillery itself. Does the idea of sampling a spirit before purchasing make sense? Of course it does. Unfortunately you can't do that at retailers in Wisconsin. We'd like to change that but we need your help.

Read on for details....

Sampling Spirits is a Safe and Responsible Way For Consumers to Make an Informed Decision.

Wisconsin currently has 20 distilleries open or in the process of opening. We're all very small and do not have huge marketing budgets. The best way we can introduce consumers to our locally made products is to get them to try them. We just want a level playing field, we're not looking for a market advantage over beer and wine, we just want what they already have- the ability to sample our products where consumers can buy them in state licensed retailers.

You may have been shopping on a Saturday afternoon and seen someone sampling beer or wine in your local liquor or grocery store. Did you know that while you can taste beer or wine at a liquor store you can't taste spirits? We're trying to change that and currently have bills in both the Wisconsin State Assembly and The State Senate. Unfortunately time is running out, the current legislative session ends in about a month. This is why we need your help.

How You Can Help

We're asking you to contact your legislators (via phone call and/or email) and ask them to support Assembly Bill AB344 or Senate Bill SB535, also please contact the offices of Assembly Speaker Robin Vos and Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald and ask them to get the bill to the floor for a vote. We have had tremendous bi-partisan support in both the assembly and senate for this bill that will help local businesses, we believe it will pass if we can get legislators to vote!

A Few Key Facts

  • 38 States including every state surrounding WI allow in store tastings.
  • Alcohol is Alcohol. It doesn't matter what type it is, only how much is consumed. The bills in the WI legislature allow an amount of spirits to be tasted that falls between what is currently allowed for beer and wine.
  • Wisconsin's neighboring states treat Wisconsin distillers better than Wisconsin does when it comes to sampling.

Changing this law will have a big positive effect on Wisconsin small businesses like mine and it will give consumers the opportunity to try before they buy. If we don't succeed this time we won't be able to start over on a new bill until 2015! I can't urge you enough, we need to act soon if we have any hope of getting this voted on and passed in the next 30 days. Please feel free to contact me at vodkaguy@greatlakesdistillery.com with any questions or concerns you may have.
