QUOTES OF THE WEEK

He made so many promises. We thought that he was going to be – I shouldn’t say this at Christmastime, but – the next messiah. And the whole ObamaCare, or whatever you want to call it, the Affordable Health Act, it just hasn’t worked for him, and he’s stumbled around on it, and people feel very disappointed because they expected more.”
Barbara Walters

"Well, I mean, it's remarkable that it would take half a decade for the veil to be lifted from her eyes. Five years to realize the man isn't a messiah? I think it took some of us –  well, almost all of us – about, you know, an hour and a half to realize that he gives a good speech, but he's shown no aptitude at governing. So I'm glad that she's aboard, but she's a little late."
Charles Krauthammer reacting to Barbara Walters

"There are some individuals who may be looking at increases. I think you cannot make a statement based on cost unless you compare what they had to what they're going into."
During a visit to Miami, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius stopped at a local library to talk to local residents about enrolling on the health insurance website. She also acknowledged that some people will pay higher premiums under Obamacare.

“This week Obamacare passed an unflattering milestone. As of today, the Obama administration has spent longer botching the implementation of Obamacare than the Roosevelt and Truman administrations spent fighting and winning the Second World War.”
Ed Haislmaier, senior research fellow in health-policy studies at the Heritage Foundation

"Every major city which is a center of poverty is run by Democrats. Every major city. Their policies have failed, they're not willing to admit and the fact is it's the poor who suffer."
Newt Gingrich

“I’m reminded of something Bill Maher said during the height of the Paula Deen controversy: ‘Do we always have to make people go away?’ I think the question applies in this situation, too.

“Why is our go-to political strategy for beating our opponents to silence them? Why do we dismiss, rather than engage them?

“GK Chesterton said that bigotry is ‘an incapacity to conceive seriously the alternative to a proposition.’ If he is right—and he usually is—then I wonder if the Duck Dynasty fiasco says more about our bigotry than Phil’s.”

Brandon Ambrosino is a writer and professional dancer based in Baltimore

"The politically correct crowd is tolerant of all viewpoints, except those they disagree with. II don't agree with quite a bit of stuff I read in magazine interviews or see on TV. In fact, come to think of it, I find a good bit of it offensive. But I also acknowledge that this is a free country and everyone is entitled to express their views. In fact, I remember when TV networks believed in the First Amendment. It is a messed up situation when Miley Cyrus gets a laugh, and Phil Robertson gets suspended."
Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal on the Duck Dynasty controversy

"The legislation that is on the books is lethal. It is killing people. All of these gun free zones are murder magnets, and we’ve simply got to get rid of them. It’s an illusion to think that somehow we’re going to be safer because we can’t have a gun in a particular area, because the bad guy is gonna have a gun."
Gun Owners of America President Larry Pratt discussing how to prevent mass shootings and violence in the future

"We waste two years talking about healthcare, and I’m like, why are we talking about healthcare when we should be talking about heath? I spend six months a year in Norway. Healthcare’s free in Norway because everybody’s healthy. You can’t even discuss healthcare in a logical way. And I know his thing is going to help a few people, and that’s nice. But mostly it’s almost worthless.”
Steven Van Zandt, the guitarist for Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, coming down strongly on ObamaCare

“Instead of outreach programs and sappy TV ads with parents imploring their kids to sign up for Obamacare, President Barack Obama needs to start thinking creatively if he wants his signature legislative achievement to be a success.

“The share of 18 to 34 year olds signing up on nine of the state exchanges ranges from about 10 percent in Minnesota to 37 percent in Massachusetts, with most clustered around 20 percent, according to the New York Times. Obamacare can't work with those kinds of results. So what can the president do to drum up interest among the young and the healthy before it's too late?

“First, announce and advertise that everyone between the ages of 18 and 34 who enrolls on the health-care exchanges by the end of the year is automatically entered in a lottery. Winners will receive everything from a free iPhone or iPad to a full-year of health-care underwritten by Uncle Sam. Refer a friend and get a discount. Buy one (year), get one free. In states that have legalized marijuana  for recreational use -- Colorado and Washington -- by all means, throw in a bag of cannabis.”

Bloomberg View columnist Caroline Baum

“When it comes to the African-American community, you have a plethora of individuals. For example, the black population hasn't given the Republican Party more than 15% of its vote since 1964. And anybody who is deemed a black conservative, I am not one of them -- I'm a registered Independent, just to get that out of the way -- but those that I know who are black conservatives are considered pariahs and are ostracized in our communities and it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.”
Stephen A. Smith of ESPN

“There are a couple of macro dynamics that are going to provide significant headwinds for the housing market. One is taxes, and all the financial obligations that are rolled up into property taxes. As governments continue to spend more and more, local as well as state, jurisdictional, and federal the fundamental result is that property taxes continue to rise on real estate.

“The property taxes are the real killers in real estate because a homeowner can even diligently pay off their mortgage and owe nothing on their home (which is becoming rarer these days), but still even in these best of circumstances the future property tax obligations are going to catch up to the homeowners as their income shrinks once they retire.

“Subsequently these individuals incomes shrink drastically, but the property taxes continue to escalate as these local and state jurisdictions need to get more money to support poor fiscal spending policies, and eventually homeowners have to sell their homes because they cannot afford a decade`s worth of property taxes.”

“I wonder if we should take some of that money and put it elsewhere. I don’t want to be the Grinch here but people in this country need food.”
David Letterman, disturbed by Americans spending $20 billion a year on toys
