The Barking Lot-America's Finest Dog Blog (09/07/13)

The Barking Lot

The Barking Lot is a regular weekly feature of This Just In
Written by my lovely wife, Jennifer and me.  It opens with the weekend dog walking forecast followed by the main blog from dog lover, Jennifer. Then its DOGS IN THE NEWS and our close. Enjoy!

THE WEEKEND DOG-WALKING FORECAST: We grade the weather outlook for taking your pet outdoors.

TODAY:  A 30% chance of isolated thunderstorms throughout the day. High of 84.  "B"

SUNDAY:  Partly cloudy. High of 73. "A"

Here’s my lovely wife, Jennifer with this week’s main blog:

I think I might have mentioned once or twice that I’m not a sports fan.  I don’t play, I don’t watch, I don’t understand 99% of the rules of any game.   I don’t appreciate sports.  But I do appreciate tradition… and colleges & universities are loaded with that.  So while you won’t ever hear me quote season stats for any team you might hear me talk about their mascots.  But not just any mascots.  You see I don’t really care about elephants, horses, alligators, ducks, tigers or any other animal save for one cool badger.

Give me a canine mascot though and I’m all over it like Lee Corso.  There are plenty of pups to choose from… even this thorough list missed a few if you read the comments.

The majority of college canine mascots are bulldogs.  (Even I know who Uga is.)  Apparently there are other cities in Indiana besides South Bend that have universities with football teams… who knew?  ;-)  Butler University truly loves their mascots – past, present and future, and Blue is a fixture.

News video from January of this year explains how Blue II was retiring and handing his collar over to Blue III after an impressive run:

Just days ago players, students, alums, and fans said goodbye to Blue II.  After giving his all to his team and his fans, Blue II suffered ailments that he just couldn’t overcome.  He had an impressive career and was loved by many.

Admittedly I wasn’t terribly aware of Blue’s contribution to the college football scene.  Learning more about him and the legacy he’s a part of makes my heart go out to his handler, his fans, and the people that loved him.  RIP, Blue II and may your doggie spirit live on in Blue III.
