Culinary yes-yes #19

Although often times I can be a purist, food-and-drink snob (like with my Pimm’s cups) there are other times I’ll break tradition when my taste buds feel like it.  I’m Polish & Catholic but I prefer my Paczki to be raspberry, not prune.  (GASP!  The horror!  I don’t care for prune!)  And you can ask my dear husband… when we go out for fish fry’s you will never, EVER see this combo on my plate:

Applesauce on pancakes?  ***SHUDDER***  Not in a million years.

Just last week, I wrote about my feelings that there should be more food blogs bringing authentic tastes of Ireland to the States.  Now I’m going to contradict myself.

I will be the first to admit that when it comes to Irish soda bread, I’m with Melissa Clark.  She and I agree that while soda bread made with just flour, salt, baking soda and buttermilk is certainly authentic and traditional, it’s not necessarily the tastiest.  Just the addition of two simple ingredients (raisins and sugar) can yield a loaf that I would easily and gladly eat in its entirety.  In one day.  In one sitting, for that matter.

Corned beef and cabbage as we know it isn’t authentic Irish food either.  But you can bet your shamrocks I’ll be eating it one week from today.  So what better way to treat yourself than with another not-technically-REAL-Irish creation?

Not only do I agree with Melissa Clark, I think her idea of Irish Soda BUNS is fantastic!

More crunchy crust to love!  And perhaps more importantly if you simply eat a bun and not the entire loaf in one sitting you might feel better about your self-control.  (Unless of course you eat ALL the buns… not that I’m planning on that or anything.)

A simple twist on an Irish classic, just in time for St. Patrick’s Day?  Absolutely, positively a Culinary Yes Yes!

CULINARY YES YES BONUSES:

I do love my ‘80’s music.  Why not some ‘80’s food to go with it?
