The Barking Lot-America's Finest Dog Blog (03/09/13)

The Barking Lot

The Barking Lot is a regular weekly feature of this just in…Written by my lovely wife, Jennifer and me.  It opens with the weekend dog walking forecast followed by the main blog from dog lover, Jennifer. Then it’s DOGS IN THE NEWS and our close. Enjoy!

THE WEEKEND DOG-WALKING FORECAST: We grade the weather outlook for taking your pet outdoors.

TODAY:  UPDATED: Light rain this morning will end by 11:30. Showers begin mid-afternoon. High of 38. "D"

SUNDAY:  The rain that began Saturday continues all day. High of 41. "F"

Here’s my lovely wife, Jennifer with this week’s main blog:

I have suffered from seasonal & environmental allergies for most of my life.  Generally I just take OTC antihistamines from first bloom to first frost and deal with it.  Kevin, on the other hand, has no issues with things like this.  If he sneezes once during the months of June, July and August it’s because he got pool water in his nose.

I hate – and I do mean HATE – cold weather.  The only thing keeping us in Wisconsin, quite frankly, is the lack of a job offer to Kevin in a toastier clime.  I would welcome an average “winter” temperature of 52º to 57º for a high and only 34º to 38º for a low, but I suppose our southern neighbors do face some challenges earlier than we do…  seasonal allergies.

2012 was quite the year for the sneezin’ season.  If, as mentioned above, Atlanta is any indication of what we’re in for when we (finally) start our spring, get the tissues ready.  If you have symptoms you’ll want anything from Allegra to Zyrtec.

So where am I going with all this nasal news?  Well, if you think the two-legged members of your family are the only ones who can suffer this time of year think again.  If you have noticed the family pooch scratching more, or sneezing uncontrollably then chances are he/she is suffering from seasonal allergies.  Fortunately there are ways to cope just like there are for humans.  Antihistamines are a possible source of relief, as are a short-term dose of steroids.

This year if you are itching & scratching, rubbing your eyes, sneezing and dealing with a raspy voice and scratchy throat; please don’t dismiss your dog may be suffering the same ways you are.

From a fellow allergy sufferer, good luck with Summer 2013 whenever it strikes.
