Here are, in my view, interesting, noteworthy columns and articles from the past week that I highly recommend (You will note that on occasion, I do not endorse the opinions of the author and may point that out. Despite my disagreements, I still feel the piece is worth a read).

Arizona ruling: Ripe for appeal

“The radical advocates for illegal immigrants and open-borders zealots didn’t score a wholesale legal victory.  Most of the lawyers and experts I have spoken with consider the preliminary injunction to be ripe for appeal.”

Behind the leaked documents

The man behind the torrent of leaked documents wants to end the war in Afghanistan, and he doesn’t care how much damage he does to the troops on the ground in that hostile environment. Now hailed by anti-war liberals as some kind of a hero, Australian computer hacker Julian Assange is part of an international cabal dedicated to doing mischief that endangers U.S. national security. The viciousness displayed by Assange against the U.S. forces in Afghanistan was shown in sickening detail when he published the Social Security numbers of U.S. servicemen and women, exposing them all kinds of dangers.“

A Democrat walks into a psychiatrist’s office…

“Come in. Make yourself comfortable. What's that? You are a congressional Democrat? Relax. Here, wipe your tears. The wizards at the Democratic National Committee have the answer.”

Liberals? Progressives? Just call them control freaks

As they attempt to move the country on a trajectory toward greater government control of our lives, liberals are also pushing the country away from two great constants consistently advocated by the Founding Fathers: the principles of limited government chartered in the Constitution and the natural moral law enshrined in the Declaration of Independence.”

Our bloated government can’t fight obesity

“Enthusiasm for Mrs. Obama's obesity agenda is causing some folks to apply the typical, knee-jerk government solutions to a problem that government cannot solve. Ironic, too, since our government is even more bloated than our citizenry.”

Seven deceptive mainstream media techniques

“Objective journalism is for all intents and purposes now dead in the United States. What that means is that you not only have to pay attention to the story the mainstream media's giving you, but you've also got to try to figure out how they're spinning the story. If you don't understand the story AND the slant, you don't understand the story. So, with that in mind, here are just some of the mainstream media's favorite tricks.”

Photos of the Week

In this April 22, 2010 file photo, a Customs and Border Patrol agent patrols along the international border in Nogales, Ariz. As the days tick down until the Arizona immigration law takes effect, the state stands as a monument to the anger over illegal immigration that is present in so many places. The anger has been simmering for years, and erupted into a full-blown fury with the murder of a prominent rancher on the border earlier this year. The killing became a powerful rallying cry for immigration reform, but it does not tell the whole story about how Arizona got to this point. (AP Photo/Matt York, File)

A group of illegal immigrants listen to a Border Patrol agent while being deported to Mexico at the Nogales Port of Entry in Nogales, Ariz., Wednesday, July 28, 2010. A federal judge on Wednesday blocked the most controversial parts of Arizona's immigration law from taking effect, delivering a last-minute victory to opponents of the crackdown. The overall law  took effect Thursday, but without the provisions that angered opponents, including sections that required officers to check a person's immigration status while enforcing other laws. MJS readers get it, MJS doesn't on sewer problems

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Editorial Board never ceases to demonstrate out completely out of touch they are with reality.

Keep in mind that the MMSD continuously, when we get a couple of inches of rain, dumps millions and millions of crapola into our greatest natural resource, Lake Michigan. No one seems to care, including hypocritical enviros and the Journal Sentinel editorial writers who put up a gem last week, blasting a Michigan company for allowing oil to spill into the Kalamazoo River.
The Journal Sentinel editorial writers went into hysteria:

A million-gallon oil spill has fouled the Kalamazoo River and may threaten Lake Michigan. The oil must not be allowed into the lake.

In a heartbreakingly familiar scene, workers are slogging into swollen waters to rescue wildlife and skim oil after a massive spill.

Only this time it's happening in Michigan, and this time the oil threatens not the Gulf of Mexico, but Lake Michigan. The oil must not be allowed into the lake. Federal and state officials should do everything they can to see to that.

The oil - about 1 million gallons of it - leaked from a pipeline owned by Enbridge Energy Partners before the breach was discovered and the pipeline shut down on Monday, federal officials say.”

The Journal Sentinel do-gooders then ripped the company’s past violations and argued it must be held accountable.

“But if we've learned anything from the disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, it's that vigilance is virtue. Regulations must be tough and enforced. Companies must understand their responsibility. We urge officials to examine both the company's actions and inspection regimens. But first, stop the spill and protect the lake.”

"Three words which sent a liberal scurrying for the exit" or, how some liberals have no sense of humor

One of my favorite interviews when I worked at WUWM, Milwaukee Public Radio was when Rick Smolan visited our studios.

Yes, it's true, bleeding heart liberals. I worked at public radio......FOR OVER 11 YEARS!

Back to the business at hand.

The name Rick Smolan may not ring a bell, but you’ve probably seen his work. Smolan is one of the key creators of the Day in the Life series of books, described this way on

The most renowned photography book series in history. Created by Rick Smolan and David Elliot Cohen. Every Day in the Life book is shot by approximately 100 top photojournalists during a single 24-hour period.”

The end result is a gorgeous coffee table size book filled with incredible pictures. When Smolan and I met, we discussed his adventurous project, “A Day in the Life of America.”

Looking back, Smolan reminds me in many ways of Ken Burns, whom I also met and interviewed, that has captured so much of what is great about our history and culture.

Meeting Smolan. That was about 25 years ago, and I still remember.

That’s why I more than chuckled when I stumbled upon a blog by Chris Wysocki of Caldwell, New Jersey who related a hilarious anecdote demonstrating that liberals, though quick to dish it out, are very thin-skinned and can’t take it in return. They’re not warm and fuzzy and inclusive. In fact, many have no sense of humor whatsoever.

Case in point……a blog I read  while filling in on WISN last Friday.

Imagine a bent out of shape liberal at a party, getting all huffy and puffy and storming out of the room.

Enjoy, and thank you, Chris Wysocki.

Coming Soon: The Largest Tax Increase in History

Prepare for the Largest Tax Hike in American

Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse.....

At 12:01 a.m. on January 1, 2011, the largest tax increase in American history could go
into effect if Congress fails to act.

As the Investor's Business Daily editorial board explains:

Unless something's done soon, the new year will also come with a raft of tax hikes --
including a return of the death tax -- that will be real killers.

These tax increases could cost $2.6 trillion over the next decade, stalling our economic
recovery -- and threatening millions of American jobs. For a family of four earning
$50,000 a year, they could have an increase of $2,100.

Email Congress today and tell them to act now to stop the largest tax increase
in our country's history.

In this time of economic uncertainty, raising taxes on the American people and businesses
will only compound our economic hardships. It will stifle job creation and investment,
which is what we're dependent on to stimulate the economy.

Make sure Congress hears you loud and clear. Please click here and tell Congress to act
NOW -- and stop another economic disaster.

"Calls for an investigation into the questionable funding of the mosque have been made, but New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg said such a probe would be an 'insensitive' and 'un-American' display of intolerance to a religious group.

How dare we be insensitive to a faction of Islam that has issued a global jihad (a call for deadly war against all non-Muslims), seeks to impose its will on all of us, and has taken down American buildings and human lives to underscore its point?"
