QUOTES OF THE WEEK

"I don't know that I have a great answer. I will start my answer by saying that this is too late. It's too late for probably most people, and that's my fault. I viewed this situation as one big lie that I repeated a lot of times, and as you said, it wasn't as if I just said no and I moved off it."
Lance Armstrong when asked by Oprah Winfrey why admit now that he lied about doping.

"This is incredibly embarrassing to talk about, but over an extended period of time, I developed an emotional relationship with a woman I met online. We maintained what I thought to be an authentic relationship by communicating frequently online and on the phone, and I grew to care deeply about her. To realize that I was the victim of what was apparently someone's sick joke and constant lies was, and is, painful and humiliating. It further pains me that the grief I felt and the sympathies expressed to me at the time of my grandmother's death in September were in any way deepened by what I believed to be another significant loss in my life. I am enormously grateful for the support of my family, friends and Notre Dame fans throughout this year. To think that I shared with them my happiness about my relationship and details that I thought to be true about her just makes me sick. I hope that people can understand how trying and confusing this whole experience has been. In retrospect, I obviously should have been much more cautious. If anything good comes of this, I hope it is that others will be far more guarded when they engage with people online than I was. Fortunately, I have many wonderful things in my life, and I'm looking forward to putting this painful experience behind me as I focus on preparing for the NFL Draft."
Notre Dame linebacker Manti Teo

"This week, I delivered my third State of the State address to the people of Wisconsin.  I’m happy to say we are moving Wisconsin forward with bold vision and bright hope for the future.

"When I delivered my first address, I had just taken office, and we were facing monumental challenges–including a $3.6 billion budget deficit and 7.8% unemployment.  We made tough, but prudent choices and vowed to remain focused on what’s best for future generations.

"One year later, we were turning things around.  After balancing the budget and putting in place long-term structural reforms, we worked hard to identify the needs of job creators, to help put people back to work.  Property taxes on a median valued home went down for the first time in 12 years.  We even added money to the state’s rainy day fund.

“Today, we have a $342 million dollar budget surplus.  For the first time in history, we added money to the rainy day fund in two consecutive years.  And property taxes – are down again this year on a median valued home.  As for the unemployment, rate it’s down to 6.7%.”

Governor Walker

“I will seek to thwart this action by any means necessary, including but not limited to eliminating funding for implementation, defunding the White House, and even filing articles of impeachment.”

Texas Republican Rep. Steve Stockman threatened Monday that he would file articles of impeachment against President Barack Obama if he institutes gun control measures with an executive order.

"First of all, he is a black. And as a black person being the president of the United States, that is something they still cannot get over."
Representative Hank Johnson (D-Ga.) on why the National Rifle Association (NRA) opposed President Barack Obama's gun control plans.

"I think you need to put everything on the table, but what I hear from the administration -- and if the Washington Post is to be believed -- that's way -- way in extreme of what I think is necessary or even should be talked about. And it's not going to pass."
Democratic Senator Heidi Heitkamp describing President Obama's gun control proposals.

“[I] think we should respond with the next Republican president having executive orders [that say] we won’t ban abortions, but we will just ban abortionists and abortion clinics. How would that be? I mean, they’re not serious about doing anything about shooting in America. Dianne Feinstein has a concealed carry permit, for good reason.”
Ann Coulter referring to Feinstein admitting in 1995 that she had a concealed-carry permit for her own safety.

"We are not a deadbeat nation."
President Obama

“You shouldn’t be too greedy if you’re living off others. In my speeches, I often joke that a tick or a flea is in trouble if it’s feasting on a dog that dies. Well, on a more serious note, this can happen to countries. Greece is in deep trouble because there are too many people riding in the wagon and not enough people pulling the wagon.”
Daniel J. Mitchell, expert on tax reform and supply-side tax policy at the Cato Institute.

“As mayor, my responsibility is to do everything I can is to do everything I can to protect the health and safety and increase the longevity of the people that live in this city. As an American, and as a human being, I have a responsibility to not push, to not force anybody to do anything but to explain what I think and to educate people to the extent of what I believe that would be in their self-interest.”
Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York.

“The task in front of general manager Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy following the 579-yard beating the Packers' defense took (in the playoff loss against San Francisco) is to figure out whether they can go forward with the same coaches and same personnel philosophy. Under defensive coordinator Dom Capers the past four seasons, the defense has at times been unable to stop the run, unable to communicate consistently in the secondary and unable to stand up to hot quarterbacks. Its saving grace other times has been creating turnovers and getting sacks, but too often the season has ended on a disappointing note.”
Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

"So while I’m here being all confessional, I guess I have a sudden urge to say something that I’ve never really been able to air in public. So, a declaration that I’m a little nervous about but maybe not quite as nervous as my publicist right now, huh Jennifer? But I’m just going to put it out there, right? Loud and proud, right? So I’m going to need your support on this.”
Jodie Foster at the Golden Globes.
