There's a real need to know what's really going on in Franklin
First things first. My disappointment (not anger) with Janet Evans not blogging at all about the school board’s action last week on the budget has long expired. Though I’m glad I blogged about it Monday because it resulted in a thoughtful and informative response.
The comment left on my blog from Janet Evans is worth repeating. Here’s the pertinent excerpt:
“Upon my arrival to the meeting and finding Draft #3 presented to me minutes before the meeting with the information regarding the TID (basically stated just as you have it in your blog post) I suggested whether this money should be returned to the taxpayers by reducing the levy further. There was no interest in this by the Board. Also, it is my belief that FPS has not used Governor Walker's ‘tools’ effectively. No changes were made in health insurance for the District, as yet(although there are plans regarding insurance for next July - a year too late as far as I am concerned). And, there is the issue of budgeting 2.68% for wage increases.
There was no other discussion on the budget/levy.”
No discussion at all on budget or levy? That means, as I blogged Monday, that school board members with the exception of Evans essentially rubber-stamped the budget put forth by the administration.
God forbid any elected school board member would actually use any brain power to suggest amendments to the budget. Nahhh! It’s much easier to simply show up, do what you’re told, shut up, and vote yes.
The beauty of the NOW community sites is that a NOW reporter might (noticed I didn’t say “will”) pick up on an important community story now that the Journal sentinel has more or less given up on extensive suburban coverage. The NOW reporters, sorry, are woefully inadequate. So there’s hope that aggressive, energetic, go-getter bloggers will (and usually do) pick up on significant information lost to the NOW staff. This is all enhanced when a NOW blogger happens to be an elected official.
That’s why I was encouraged by Janet Evans’ return to the NOW blogosphere. She admirably, commendably refuses to drink the FPS Kool-Aid. She votes accordingly. I only wish she’d blog more bluntly. I do understand she has to work with her colleagues and she is mired in the minority. However, she shoulders a bigger burden than she may fully realize.
This is not an overstatement. Janet Evans represents another view and perspective that
She herself stated at a school board meeting that she wasn’t there to make friends. She was there to do a job. BRAVO!
Janet Evans is free to do her blog the way she chooses. She knows that. I know that.
My thought is this: Dear Janet, you have nothing to lose. Fight the good fight through the communication tool you have available.
This taxpayer hopes Janet Evans stops being punched in the face (in one losing vote after another) and comes out swinging in her blog by reporting the truth and what’s really happening. Janet, they can’t beat you there.
The Journal Sentinel doesn't care about jobs
Or Scott Walker.
If it did, it would be giving glowing coverage to what happened today in Green Bay.
Governor Walker held a small business/jobs summit at Lambeau Field that had incredible interest and attendance.
Here’s the agenda.
Here’s what, as Charlie Sykes calls it, “the local dead tree” on its website decided to focus on, via WTMJ TV.

Franklin, I hate to say I told you so, but...
I told you so.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports:
“With enrollment mounting and old buildings wearing out, the
Steve Patz, superintendent of the 4,300-student district, said the district is relying on a community survey conducted a year ago to start coming up with a facilities plan.”
Here are some excerpts from some of my previous blogs related to this very subject.
January 11, 2010
Does the school district think we are really this stupid, that we can’t see through this entire charade? (The answer is yes, they do).
They’re trying to come across looking as though they really care about what you have to say and about communications between taxpayers and the district. If they really cared about what you felt, they would have had the guts to set up a table in City Hall at tax time and meet face to face with the people they screwed.
Fill out a survey, or three, or 300 and tell these deaf mutes you hate what they did to you and their merry tax and spending ways. Do you really, really, really think they are going to listen?
It’s insulting. It's an absolute joke.
My advice? Deposit this garbage where it belongs, in the trash, because that’s what it is. Phone and/or send these board members correspondences that you’re unhappy with their fiscal irresponsibility and if they don’t stop, you’ll vote for someone else.
Surveys? Polls? Gimme a break! They’re meaningless.
These stick up artists will rob you blind every chance they get no matter what you say on any non-binding questionnaire.
Don’t waste your time on this government waste. Toss the survey in the trash. Instead, give the School Board members a good, well-reasoned, thought out piece of your mind.
And then watch, and pay close attention to what these highway robbers do, and make them shake and shiver come election time.

Another story that the MJS didn't cover
When the governor holds an all-day jobs summit during times of high unemployment, that’s news. Unless you’re the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Here are stories that didn’t make our paper today, but did appear elsewhere.
Dear Denise Callaway, please read this
Last Friday night during InterCHANGE on Milwaukee Public Television, the panel discussed firearms in the state Capitol now that conceal-carry is the law in Wisconsin. Friend and colleague Denise Callaway said there was no need for any citizen to bring a gun into the Capitol since we already have the Capitol Police.
Why am I not surprised that an MSNBC host has the exact viewpoint.
IT'S WORKING!

Here’s my lovely wife, Jennifer with this week’s main blog:
As I have mentioned MANY times on The Barking Lot the main reason Kevin is against becoming a pet parent is because of the all-too-soon, inevitable loss. There is also a practical, though secondary, reason he prefers to remain dogless… our love of travel. This year will be our first of dozens of trips through the years with our beautiful daughter Kyla. Yes, we are the parents we vowed we would never be. We are taking Kyla to Walt Disney World. (Thoughts and details soon to be provided on Ms. Elaine Kneeous.) I must admit if we had a fur baby in our family we would have to arrange another set of details entirely, one that would add a nice additional layer of stress to an already crazy season.
The Daily Growl blog offers tips for pet parents, whether vacationing by wings or wheels. I know there are many families out there who wouldn’t dream of taking a trip sans Fido regardless of the extra hassle. As the holiday travel season will be in full swing VERY soon, it always helps to have some pointers for your Pointer.
If driving cross-country with pet in tow is not your idea of a rollicking time, consider a trip between selected cities. For those of us in the
Please stay safe and sane this season, no matter what your travel plans are.

2011 POO Awards - A special note
I’ve been critical of Milwaukee Riverside pouring on the score this season. I’ve also written that they’re a very good football team, so good they don't need to resort to fake punts in the second half when they're up by 50 points.
They proved how good they are Friday night, advancing in the playoffs. This is rare for an MPS school. I’ve attended or worked at MPS football games just about every week with only a few exceptions since 1965. It’s good to see a city team go this deep into the season.

Here are, in my view, interesting, noteworthy columns and articles from the past week that I highly recommend (You will note that on occasion, I do not endorse the opinions of the author and may point that out. Despite my disagreements, I still feel the piece is worth a read).

Why our blacks are better than their blacks

This is why the liberal website Politico ran with a story on Cain that had everything -- a powerful black man, a Republican presidential candidate, the hint of sexuality -- except facts."
Public schools pay teachers 50% above market
"Far from being underpaid, the typical public-school teacher makes out very well indeed, according to a new report from The Heritage Foundation’s Center for Data Analysis. 'Assessing the Compensation of Public-School Teachers' concludes that, while some may well be underpaid, the typical public school teacher makes about $1.52 for every dollar made by a private-sector employee with similar skills."

Occupy movement's disturbing reaction to rape
"Not only are reports of rape becoming more and more common at Occupy protests across the country, but the movement’s reaction to sexual assault is becoming less and less serious. It is a troubling trend that has picked up in the last few days, as shown in interviews with the occupiers themselves, and through local media investigations."

What the NFL won't show you
"Every play during an NFL game is filmed from multiple angles in high definition. There are cameras hovering over the field, cameras lashed to the goalposts and cameras pointed at the coaches, who have to cover their mouths to call plays.
But for all the footage available, and despite the $4 billion or so the NFL makes every year by selling its broadcast rights, there's some footage the league keeps hidden."
