Dear Residents,

In my previous newsletter I noted that Franklin door-to-door solicitors are required to register at city hall. As a result of that notice, I received additional information to share on this topic. Other meetings, events and notices provided here prove that Franklin residents are sharing, talking and working together to find solutions to today’s challenges. I would like to thank everyone who has contributed toward improving our community and keeping it safe. 

Please note two events will take place on Thursday, September 29th!

SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2011 UPDATES

Door-to-door solicitation

If faced with concerns related to door-to-door solicitation, residents can contact the Wisconsin Better Business Bureau (BBB) at 414-847-6000 and ask for their investigator.  You may also want to tell solicitors you would like a business card so you can check with the BBB.  If they don't have a local phone number and office location, it is definitely worth checking out to avoid being taken advantage of.  Never give people money unless you know how reputable they are and always consider the need for a contract for any work to be completed.

Dental Associates Clinic – NOW OPEN!

Join me in welcoming Dental Associates to Franklin’s 3rd District. They are located on 27th Street just north of Rawson Avenue. If you are in need of a dentist this new facility is definitely worth checking into.

College Avenue

Milwaukee County recently started the road-resurfacing project for College Avenue from 51st east to 27th. Funding cuts nearly delayed ANY repairs until 2016 but thanks to cooperation between the adjoining municipalities, the County and dedicated residents, we will see needed improvements four years earlier than anticipated. College Avenue will be closed East to 27th Street and expect temporary traffic pattern changes on 51st and 35th Streets during this construction period.

Citizen Quarry Monitoring Meeting

September 29th, 7 p.m. Franklin City Hall

Some areas of the 3rd and 5th Districts have received a flyer about a quarry meeting. Area residents living near the quarry that have concerns about air quality monitoring apparently put out this flyer. You may want to attend their meeting if this issue interests you.

"The Zero Campaign" Special Town Hall Meeting

Featured speakers include Franklin Municipal Court Judge Fred Klimetz, Franklin Police Chief Rick Oliva, Franklin High School Principal Mike Cady and Wheaton Franciscan Family Therapist Damon Camarata. A Franklin High School student will share her near fatal experience with designer, synthetic drugs, which are dangerous, potentially fatal and highly attractive to our children.

At the Town Hall you will hear about legal consequences of teen alcohol and drug use, parent responsibilities if hosting a party, parenting strategies to establish communication and set expectations with your children to prevent involvement in substance use.

FAPSU will meet again October 13th at 6 p.m. at the Franklin Public Library. FAPSU meets the second Thursday of each month. For more information go to www.fapsu.org.

Mayor’s 2012 Recommended Budget

On September 21, 2011, Mayor Tom Taylor released his City of Franklin Recommended Budget for 2012 and it has been provided to the Finance Committee for review, which began discussions on September 27th. The Finance Committee will continue review on October 11th at 4 p.m.  An additional meeting is scheduled for October 17th if needed. The Finance Committee will review the budget and then provide a recommendation to the Common Council for the Council’s final consideration. All meetings are open to the public. Please check the calendar on the City’s website or call 425-7500 to confirm meeting dates and times. A public hearing on the budget is scheduled for November 15th.  To read more on the Mayor’s proposed budget go to www.franklinwi.gov.
