The Barking Lot is a regular weekly feature of this just in…Written by my lovely wife, Jennifer and me. It opens with the weekend dog walking forecast followed by the main blog from dog lover, Jennifer. Then it’s DOGS IN THE NEWS and our close. Enjoy!
THE WEEKEND DOG-WALKING FORECAST: We grade the weather outlook for taking your pet outdoors.
TODAY: Flurries. Very windy. High of just 35. "D"
SUNDAY: Partly cloudy. High of just 35. "D"
Here’s my lovely wife, Jennifer with this week’s main blog:
In my September 11, 2010 edition, my blog discussed feeding human food to your canine companion. The last paragraph stated, “There is as much debate over feeding your dog a human food diet as there is over its owners being vegetarians vs. omnivores. For the Future Fischer dog, a human diet is as guaranteed as Mr. and Mrs. Fischer never touching tofu.” Well, the plant vs. meat debate has now moved to our four-legged friends’ diets. No, I’m not kidding.
Shelley Boyle stopped feeding her Cleo meat, dairy, and eggs in the hopes of clearing chronic ear infections. Why does it not register on my surprise meter that this woman lives in
Yes, Shelley’s vet gave it a green thumbs-up to switch her dog’s diet. In fact, “‘Her health and well-being is the main thing for us, but that fact we have a vegan option is a double-benefit because it means our dog can live with the same ideology,’ she says.”
“Our dog can live with the same ideology.” HUH???? Wow. I give lots of credit to our friends of the barking persuasion. But never in my life did I think a dog could embrace an ideology. I guess the next thing is they will spray paint themselves in red to protest wearing fur.
From the always-fabulous CNN, this article also cites “professional trendsetter” Oprah Winfrey challenging her staff to go vegan for one week. But the HARPOcrite herself only said she would go vegan-ish. Isn’t that like being a little bit pregnant?
But fear not, there is a collective voice of reason out there. Many vets agree that there are not substantial health benefits for dogs of vegan diets. In fact, dogs need levels of certain proteins, vitamins, and minerals that are best delivered from MEAT. Read more details here.
Also, pet expert and author Tracie Hotchner, host of the radio show "Dog Talk" says, "If a dog has a choice he's not picking a pile of beans over chicken or meat, and he's not going to be lapping up soy. If you're going to be harmonious in your choices, be harmonious. I say respect each species for what it was meant to be, and if you feel that strongly about being vegan, get a vegetarian animal. Bunnies make wonderful pets." Bow wow, Tracie!
