This Just In ...

Kevin Fischer is a veteran broadcaster, the recipient of over 150 major journalism awards from the Milwaukee Press Club, the Wisconsin Associated Press, the Northwest Broadcast News Association, the Wisconsin Bar Association, and others. He has been seen and heard on Milwaukee TV and radio stations for over three decades. He lives with his wife, Jennifer, and their lovely baby daughter, Kyla Audrey, in Franklin.

Notice anything different about Milwaukee radio these days?

Just a few days ago we were celebrating…..

That means it must be time for…

Kevin, you are nutso!

No No No!

It is Christmastime.

Clouds out today. Rain falling. Dampness in the air. Flurries in the forecast. BRRR!

It is November 4, 2010. We are WAYYYYYYYY too late starting the Christmas celebration.

If you recall, last year, some Milwaukee radio stations started playing 24-hour Christmas music the day after Halloween. One station upon learning that a competitor was doing HO-HO-HO on November 1 changed their plans and put Christmas tunes on the airwaves on Halloween. I think we had close to 70-degree temps at that time as well making “Let It Snow” sound awfully strange.

Weird as it sounds, stations made the right move. Audience research shows overwhelming popularity for Christmas music, the sooner the better. Hell, Hallmark has been selling ornaments since Independence Day.

Why stations have this year decided not to go to Nat King Cole and Bing Crosby immediately after trick or treat came to a close, I have no idea.

But I know thousands and thousands and thousands of you WANT to hear CHRISTMAS MUSIC!

And if I was a radio station programmer, I definitely would have this on my play list.
