Culinary no-no's

This week, a holiday smorgasbord.

We begin with this.

If today’s federal government food Nazis were around circa 1970, these guys would have never seen the light of day:

Mayor McCheese, Hamburglar, Officer Big Mac, Captain Crook, and Grimace were vile creations of nefarious marketers at evil McDonald’s, just one of many large, wicked corporations.

Never mind that these popular characters were loved by an entire nation. These costumed cut-ups were immoral because they were aimed at, GASPPPPPPPP, kids.

Recently, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) sent subpoenas to 48 companies as a follow-up to a 2008 report about marketing geared to children and whether self-regulation is working.

Carol Jennings, spokeswoman for the FTC's Division of Advertising Practices/Bureau of Consumer Protection is quoted by adage.com, “We are supportive of industry voluntary efforts to limit their marketing to kids and this will see whether more is needed."

Adage.com also reports, “Some have speculated that the new round of subpoenas was a prelude to Congressional hearings and possible legislation, but Ms. Jennings refuted that. ‘We are not proposing any regulation,’ she said.”

Do I believe Jennings? Hell no.

Here are just a few of the companies that were subpoenaed.

Campbell Soup Co.: Can’t be having kids slurping chicken noodle or tomato soup.

Chiquita Brands International: Fruit. Bad.

Del Monte Fresh Produce: Veggies. Bad.

National Fluid Milk Processor Promotion Board: Are you kidding me?

The Topps Co.: Going after them is just sacrilegious. Baseball cards and bubble gum in the same pack is true Americana.
